Waterproofing standards

Can anyone let me know what CFR46 actually is as a waterproofing standard---I'm thinking of fitting a combined Radar/Chartplotter on the exposed wheel pedestal of a sailboat. Does anyone know if CFR46 is adequate for this.
I've searched but can't find any definitions of what CFR46 actually is. All help appreciated.

CFR46 is a US coastguard standard, Raymarine started using it many years ago as a standard on which to test their products.

"To test the waterproofness of a device, a standard test has been devised where the device is sprayed from all angles with a stream of water from a hose with a nozzle one inch in diameter (to create some pressure.) Water is delivered at a rate of at least 65 gallons per minute and sprayed from a distance of about 10 feet. To pass the test, the device must survive for at least 5 minutes without failure."

So in answer to your question, yes installing on the pedestal of a sailboat is what the test is designed to test for (and more!).
