What is your experience with so called waterproof tape? I am a bit sceptical. I keep hearing about butyl tape and Gorilla do a tape they say is waterproof under water but against a competitor called Flex Tape it did not do so well according to UTube video.

Interested to hear of success or failures

If it's a nice flat clean surface ordinary brown parcel tape (mylar) is surprisingly waterproof, as is genuine sellotape. Not very durable, but that wasn't the question.

Not necessarily the case with yours but I think taping things up sometimes causes more problems than it solves by trapping water which then causes damage because it can't escape or dry properly, e.g. taping up rigging screws - I prefer to tuck the split pin ends in so there's no possibility of them catching anything and not tape them.
Would a good adhesive sealant like CT1 not be a better solution for sealing your joint?

I've used both self amalgamating tape & butyl tape, butyl tape for sealing window frames to the coach roof and skin fittings and amalgamating tape for sealing vhf connections to the aerial and sealing electrical connections.

Sorry for late reply thank you, the joint is in a older Sea Marshall PLB. Unusually it has a 9 volt PP3 lithium battery which can be replaced by the user and which has a 10 yr life. I managed to download servicing instructions .The cap for the battery compartment has an O ring seal which I sourced and replaced. The instructions recommend the use of silicon grease in addition to the O ring seal.

In the end I decided to use Lanoguard waterproof grease. This is a lanolin based product I have used for a number of years. The PLB tested perfectly so very pleased with result. I like the design features of this model. The aerial is worn around your neck and the PLB activates if submersed, which is not the case with McMurdo models. Unfortunately new Sea Marshall PLB's do not allow user servicing.

Thanks, I want to seal a joint which is not flat, so not sure that would work but thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply.
What are you wanting to seal the joint against?
Water/oil/fuel leak, water/oil/fuel ingress, dust, exhaust gas escape . . .
What sort of joint is it?
Wood, metal, plastic, rubber. Threaded, compression, butt . . .
Horses for courses.

Edit just read #9 ?
