Hi All,

I know this has probably been asked before, but I need a mental nudge.

What 12v waterproof plugs would people recommend? I have seen/used many and most have not been upto the job and either let water in and failed, or have had pins fall out/plug mechanically fail.

I want to run a plug to the cockpit cave lockers so that I can run a dinghy inflator or other bits.

Ta

My tiller pilot has a Bulgin plug and socket and has been totally reliable for ten years. My dinghy pump uses Driplug sockets and plug (see another thread running currently) one of which is in the anchor locker and almost always wet but does not leak a drop. The other socket is in the cockpit and appears to be original, so probably 30 years old. Looks slightly corroded but still works well.

We have the standard Bulgin Buccaneer versions on the stern and next to the mast, so pretty exposed. We use them for either the towed/wind genny or the dinghy inflator. Work a treat. The amp rating for the sockets/plugs we have is actually lower than what the dinghy pump uses (Rated to 12 amps, whilst the dinghy pump uses just under 15 amps (That's the fuse we use), but I've not found it to be an issue.

I use these people, http://www.selectronix.co.uk/depts.asp?did=219&gclid=CMWE2LWoqL4CFdShtAodWBgAYw they do a good range including waterproof RJ45 and USB sockets but for a one off I suggest the Index Marine deck socket and plug, in fact I have one in my cockpit which is used to power the dink inflator, it's the stainless type with a good tight screw on cap to protect it when not in use.

Bulgin Buccaneers are good with IP rating 68 IIRC. They do a smaller range which I have used at the mast because of limited space which have so far been OK, but they are a lot more fiddly. I have previously used Dri-plugs without problems, but their lack of IP rating is a bit concerning.

Cable diameter will determine your choice of plug most of these type have the wire going into a hole with a small screw fixing and I suggest you use around 30 amp cable

for a dinghy inflator.
