Just wondering if anyone can recommend a waterproof mobile phone.
I've a seen a few SAMSUNG B2100s in the sailing club, and they seem to be available used for c£40.. Any experiences/comments?

I've been using a Motorola Defy for just over a year, I've tested it to 20knot+ crashes /capsizes and immersion to around 1.5/2.0m it's still working. I do add silicon grease to the port covers and the battery cover and I've added a lanyard by drilling a small hole in the back cover.

It does get a bit tricky in heavy rain working the touch screen, but I used it to navigate with Navionics in a long distance coastal race in Brittany (Costarmoricaine Raid) on an F18 which is a pretty good test.

Yes, highly recommended. SWMBO and I have had one each for almost 2 years now. Mine was in my pocket when I took a total dunking when I stepped off a dinghy into what I thought was about 6 inches of water and it turned out to be nearer 3 feet. I've also dunked mine in my mate's glass of beer and then phoned it to prove to him it really is waterproof. It's rated at 30min at 1m, but it's dustproof as well (of course) and pretty rugged (I've dropped mine countless times). Oh, and yes it still works just fine :)

Phone-wise it's pretty basic but it does the job nicely.

+1

Same experience with mine. Only criticism is the keypad automatic lock thingy is a bit of a pain at times.

Seen quite a few around building sites as well!

Check the additional functionality you need (if any). I opted for the Motorola Defy as in addition to being dunkable it is also ruggedized (Gorilla glass screen, chassis build etc.) plus it has wifi and FM broadcast radio.

Edit: seen that the Samsung also has the FM radio. Also proprietary OS so no Navionics, tides etc. if you want boaty aspects.

I have one of these, and it's really a case of 'it does what it says on the tin'. Rugged, and the built-in torch is really useful.

Audio wise, it's not great. However I also have a 'work' mobile which does all the whizzy other things, so the lack of features isn't an issue for me.

It does have internet etc, but it is slow and clunky.

I've had one for two years and it was great. Affectionately known as the 'builders phone'.
I upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy Ace which has turned out to be very dissappointing, poor signal, dropping calls, difficult to use properly so I'm going back to my old B2100. Much more user friendly and waterproof too which suits me better for sailing and fishing.

Cheap and it works, excellent piece of non pretentious yotty equipment.I have done the 'drop the phone in a pint and get someone to ring it to put a head on the beer trick' countless times. On one occasion,I was acting as the 'body' for an MOB recovery exercise.I received and replied to a txt whilst in the water. It does not float, but it does come with a good lanyard attatchment hole built in.When sailing, mine is attatched to my BA with a bit of string and a tiny snap shackle, and lives in one of the pockets on the BA.Built in torch too.I don't suppose it has a large 'posing point' factor, but I bought my phone to speak to people, not to be a status symbol. The only disadvantage so far,is that so many of us have got them locally, when one goes off in the Yotty, everyone is scrambling for their phones.
Recomended.Mine has had three years of continual rough use/abuse.I will get another if/when it fails.
Cheers
