No. When we were Chepstow based, we used to reckon the first stop going down tide was Barry. From Watermouth you might make Cardiff on the one tide but you wont get to the start of the Shoots at HW-1 which is what you should aim for
Posted to see what thev reaction would be. I always thought it would not be possible.
We left watermouth 1 hour before low water Ilfracombe, punching tide on Sunday the 6th September and arrived at St Pierre Pill at 21.15. We motor sailed all the way with the engine dying as we approached the pontoon. Yacht is an old Atalanta 26.
My first reaction was to say dont bother its not worth the effort but after reading your second post I deleted that.
You must have had a bit opf wind assistance to your boat speed and it would have been a spring tide if HW was 2115 so the perfect day for it.
Congratulations on getting there ,what were your plans if you didnt make it?I suppose Portishead could have been usefull if you had arrived an hour later.
Yes Graham, Portishead and in the "Hole" was the plan. Wind was Westerly 3-4 the forcasted 5-6 with rain didn`t happen. Hw Avonmouth was 21.22 so we would have made it even up to 22.00 hrs.
It was a trip to mark as "A good un" especially as we had been in the Holmes race on the Saturday with "Sarabande" being in the lead around the Holmes and 8th over the line but with handicap finished 48 out of 49 or thereabouts. Leaving homeSunday morning to meet the lift to Watermouth at 06.15 from St Pierre Golf Club. You could say a hectic weekend!
well done. It's 60NM and you took 8.5 hours so an average of 7kn over the ground. Say 5.5kn for boat and 1.5 kn average for tide. Obviously ideal conditions
