Watermota Seapanther won\'t start

Engine was starting and running well. Completed a 6hr motor sail into a F6 at the weekend and it didn't miss a beat. Moored up at marina to let off crew for about 1hr and then it would not restart even with easy start. It fired but would not keep running. Any ideas as to where to start finding the problem?

1/ throw away the easy start
2/ check fuel delivery system & filters

I start mine by warming area around air filter but should not need this if still warm,

Crack open the injectors one at a time and tun over you will see if fuel is being delivered and bleed system.

If no fuel then check filters

Have you been using easy start for any lenght of time? if so your engine is probably dead.

If you have fuel at the injectors, it should start.

Check the simple stuff first, like is the stop level on the injector pump really all the way back. Follow Jolina's advice but check you have fuel & not water. The only problem I had in the 5 years I've owned mine was the first time I fuelled up. The previous owner had left it 1/3 full over the winter. Either there was condensation in the tank or I had a dodgy fill. I fuelled up at the start of a day out. All worked fine, but the next weekend, the water had settled out & I had a problem.

Excellent advice from Wooselhunter!
Ignore the nonsense about Easy Start - Ether starting is fitted as standard on some big engines so it can't be too bad!!!

Sorry but you are wrong about easy start, it causes a type of pinking because it explodes instead of burning in a steady fashion, it also, because it ignites at a lower temp than diesel, ignites at a point in the ignition cycle before the ignition point decided by the designer of the engine. This causes compressed ring lands,broken rings and in some cases depressed piston crowns and so makes the engine harder to start, this gives rise to the urban myth that engines become addicted to the stuff.
It has its place as a last gasp resort, but unfortunately, owners always use too much and this is what causes the problems outlined above, 30 years of repairing diesels as a serious player in Africa and the Middle East gives me the knowledge and experience to make this statement.

Replace all fuel filters is the first thing to do. If you have been bounced around in a f6 any muck in the fuel would have been stirred up and caught by the filters (while you are doing it but a spare set to keep on board). I had starting problems at the end of last years season, after trying everything and lots of scratching of head - finally changed all the filters. fires up first time, every time now.

I would steer away from easy start and any other quick fixes, these can mask a problem that should be sorted before you need the engine in a hurry!

Having said that I did have an old boat with a Stuart Turner in it. The only way to make it start was to have a 20 min conversation over why we don't need the engine, then hit the start button when least expected to catch it by surprise. Only fellow Stuart Turner owners will understand.
