Can anyone give me details of the items that I need to service the seapanther engines in my newly purchased 1979 Sadler 32 - eg oil filter, water pump impeller etc. please. Are they standard Ford parts available from a standard car spares supplier, in which case part no.s would be appreciated, or are they modified from the car versions, in which case where can I get them from. Also, what is the correct engine oil?

These are standard parts indeed. I just bring the old ones to a farm engineering supplier and get replacement parts. You might get them in a Ford agency but they tell me that they do not supply parts earlier than 1996 and my Watermota Sea Panther is dated 1976. I will get part numbers tomorrow if you reply or send a direct message. Of far greater concern is that the main agent for our engine: Stephenson Marine, Noss On Dart Marina, Bridge Road, Kingswear, Dartmouth TQ6 0EA, Owner: Robert Hinkstone, Tel: 01803 833343 does not answer his phone any more, I have been trying to get a part for 2 months. Does anyone know if Stephenson Marine is still in business?

The Seapanther was a diesel version of the Ford crossflow engines such as used in the 60s. Watermota/Ford gave Southhampton University the task of developing a light weight diesel to compete with the then perkins 4 cyl range, I am sure the main block is similar to the Ford 1600 Cortina engine so oil filter may be the same. The seawater pump was (I think) a Jabsco so if you look on the brass front plate of the pump you should find the pump type. The fuel filter i am sure will be a standard CAV type. At the end of the day with a bit of searching arround, you should be able to find all the bits.

I get the fuel filter and oil filter from a local car spares shop. If you still need part numbers at the weekend I can get them off my spares
I also had the engine completely refurbished a couple of years ago by someone who knows Ford engines very well. He used readily available Ford bits, the only part he struggled with slightly was the gasket around the water pump housing.

For several of the parts, the advice given earlier (take the old bits to a motor factor of agricultural engineer) is best, as it is possible that different engines have different parts. After so many years, a previous owner may have fitted a new filter system. However for what it is worth, my Sea Panther uses:-

a Crossland 573 or Fram PH966 oil filter,

a Fram 1191 PL main fuel filter.

It also has a fuel pre-filter (Crossland 489)

All the above can be obtained from a motor factor or even cheaper from an on-line supplier like http://inlinefilters.co.uk/

There is NO air filter apart from a box filled with coarse "steel wool" soaked in engine oil.

I do not have a note of the water pump impeller handy but it is a Jabsco model and the impeller is something like "7000"

Parts like gaskets may be available if you ask for a Ford 1600 crossflow petrol engine set at a motor factor.

For oil, I use the cheapest diesel engine oil available. It usually comes in a black can and is available from Halfords and all supermarkets. Last year the cheapest supplier was Asda. This year, I made a special trip to Asda (my wife hates the shop) and bought 5 litres for £16. Then we went shopping at Morrisons and when I went for diesel (for the car!), I saw that their own-brand diesel engine oil was £12 for 5 litres in the petrol station shop. That hurt.

Funnily enough, though I have always credited Watermota with the conversion of the Cortina 1600 to a marine diesel, there is another claimant; the Westerbeke Corp. of Avon, Mass, USA. I do not know if these are rebadged Watermotas but the engine is identical. The workshop manual is the same i.e. has the same spec, engineering drawings, text etc. Here are some links to the Westerbeke manuals. The first link (thanks to Neil for these) is manual for the 1978 revision, the second has a date of 2010, and the 3rd is the brochure for their engine.

Anyone know any more about the connection between Westerbeke and Watermota?

By the way, Robert Hingston <stephensonmarine@hotmail.com> tells me he is too busy to answer the phone most of the time and the best thing is to contact by email.

Also did a BMC 1.5 version

Westerbeke also did a version of the BMC 1.5 as shown here.

Part no's

Wight Dawn gives you good numbers, I think. My 1979 Sea Panther has a Jabsco 9900 raw water pump, with impeller no. 673-0001B. If in doubt, ask Cleghorn Waring, who are very helpful.

Hi boat people,

I just found this thread. Although I know it's a while since it was active I'm trying my luck anyway :)

I really need your help!

I have been so unfortunate that the CAV rotary injection pump for my Watermota Sea Panther diesel engine broke down. The rod inside the pump is broken.

The model-number on the broken pump is not possible to read fully. But I'm pretty sure it says DPA 324 6857. I know that the broken pump has previously been repaired or maybe even changed by the former owner. The trouble is I can't find such a pump with that number anywhere.

I've found a manual for a Watermota Sea Panther mkII engine on google, which says that the injection pump for the motor is a CAV DPA 3247F160. But I don't know if my engine is a Sea Panther mkII or III or IIII etc.
I have located such a CAV DPA 3247F160 injection pump on Ebay and in the product description there is also says "fits a Watermota Sea Panther". Nothing about a Sea Panther mk-'anything'. Just "fits a Watermota Sea Panther".
The injection pump on ebay looks exactly like the broken one on my Sea Panther on the outside.

Can I count on the injection pump found on Ebay to fit my Sea Panther engine as it says in the service manual for the mkII and in the Ebay product description?
Or can it damage my engine if it's a wrong pump model for my Sea Panther engine??

Whay to do???!

You are absolutely correct, SeaPanther was pretty ground breaking stuff as it was a very early example of a small lightweight diesel engine employing direct injection. Blocks were graded 1600 crossflow items out of the old Dagenham foundry. Heads were supplied unmachined to Watermota.

No point in contacting Watermota when Mike Beecham purchased the company he dumped all historical stuff from Ford and became agent for Daewoo, now Doosan, latterly also other marine products. The Watermota site used to point you towards Stephenson Marine for historical engine support, looks like this has all gone.

The original Lucas 24 volt starters are not easy to find.

Sorry did not link my reply to your question (Senior moment on my part)

Have you looked at the drive end in the photographs as I think that the number you quoted as being on your engine is actually for a BMC (BUT I AM NOT CERTAIN) see this link.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMC-CAV-Ty...-/121130506710

The BMC fuel pump on the 1.5 was driven from a skew gear on the camshaft and was fitted where the distributer would have been fitted in the petrol version of the BMC 1.5.

Have you seen this webpage which was run by Stephenson Marine

http://www.stephensonmarine.co.uk/wa...herspares.html

Good luck.
