Waterlock laying on it's side blocks water flow?

I think it’s a
Onan MDKBJ 6KVA @ 2400rpm

Inlet roar is not something I’ve thought about, I will do some research
IIRC, ARE on this forum is related to Onan, no? maybe worth asking for any ideas on silencing the whole thing?
Re inlet roar, initially I had no filter on the inlet, just the casing and no sponge like thing. It was really noisy, added the filter, it quietened a fair amount! But again, I expect Onan to have that sorted anyway...

Thanks Vas. As always full of information. Right now I’m concentrating on my current project, writing up my passerelle report???

can we expect that report within 2020, or are you aiming for end of 2021?
I was planning a trip to all my local ports on a weeks cruise to test it the day lockdown began. We just had three days of perfect weather and I got to test the passerelle and just got home for lunch. So I’m ready to write!
By the way, have you heard of Roadkill? It’s a stick on sound deadening used in the automotive industry. I could stick it all over the Onan’s steel case, giving it a double use. Only problem is it will make it look permanently ugly ☹️

I'm about to fit one , I am going to use wood and glass the wood down so.i can strap it down and keep it upright with supports either side.

? lost you there, could you elaborate please?

Bouba, no, haven't heard it, don't forget you want something to dampen certain frequencies, not much point aiming at the wrong ones, road noise fe is not near the freq of a diesel engine...

Where it sits on my boat i need to built the back up so it sits level. I don't want to be drilling holes in the hull ,so I will use fiberglass and resin to make a kind of box for it to sit in and be strapped down.

The why is easy the where not so. But you are right, I’ve had many compliments on the generator installation !
I was hoping to put a small silencer just before the the thru hull fitting.
I realise that a silencer is for external noise but I would like it to be a bit quieter inside the boat. Ideally, I didn’t realise it was on, level of noise
I am not a fan of those Vetus water locks, the blown plastic construction makes them noisy as the water/exhaust gases flow through them. I would use a thick wall fibreglass marine muffler/water lock, the bigger the muffler the better the sound attenuation.

Originally my generator came with a small dustbin style muffler something like this

Unfortunately, there wasn’t a low enough place to mount it. So the only one that the engineer could fit was the Vetus waterlock.
Because the dustbin ones call themselves a muffler, and the waterlock is a waterlock first and a silencer second. I have always felt that it should have been quieter

Halyard do some smaller versions of these, as long as the muffler inlet is lower than the outlet of the generator you should be all good. You could try making an insulated box to cover the Vetus water lock. Princess yachts cover the halyard type muffler with insulation in all new builds

That’s good advice. When I have some time on my hands I will go over the entire setup with a sound meter or stethoscope.

Bouba, I just use my mobile phone with a soundmeter app, going around from aft deck to bow cabin checking dB with generator running to establish the effectiveness of certain measures. Will do tomorrow when I remove the waterlock for the generator as I've modified the exhaust elbow lifting it 150mm higher before it turns down and mixes with the water. Will also check if the muffler (again Vetus) is of any use since the exhaust goes into the custom underwater exhausts...
