i was laying some nice new rubber tiles in the cabin of my small motor boat , i thought i`d like to do it properly so rather than cut around the locating bracket/hole thingy for the small table i would lift it and lay the floor then fix it back on top just like i did with the captains chair, however when i lifted the stuck down bracket i was surprised to see a hole filled with water , so far i`ve pumped out about 5 litres , now im think maybe its meant to be there for ballast or something , anyone help please ,

oh and i hope you all had a good Christmas :-)

Obviously tasting it is a really stupid idea. :ambivalence:

Ask your Wife to taste it :encouragement:

You have water in your bilge, best ensure you can drain it regularly if you can't find the leak! Drill a 10mm hole so you can shove an oil extraction suction pump pipe down there and suck anything out regularly!

What model boat?

Ours has compartments separating the forward bilge from the rear (where the pump is). There are drain holes between compartments and the water is supposed to flow back but if the holes are blocked then water builds up in the front.
 
its a Mayland Maestro, i think the bilge under the cuddy is sealed apart from the hole for the table that i mentioned earlier , whilst onteh trailer i lifted the bow quite high and althoug the water moved it never reached the stern where the bilge pump is situated
 
Have you checked the limber holes at the bottom of the underfloor compartments. They can easily block up and prevent water making its way down the bilge pump. It would be a rare boat that did not have such connections.
 
Unless the space is meant to sealed be for bouyancy, water should drain to a point where it can be drained away.

Any possibility to get a look around through the hole you have already? Plenty of inexpensive USB endoscopes on fleabay that, albeit not up to scientific quality, are great for this kind of investigation.
If hole is large enough try to get your phone camera in.

For future access you might also consider an inspection hatch.
 
if the space is meant to be sealed, would an inspection hatch cause any problems , it would i think be a good idea to have a decent look in that area , isint unusual to have a completely sealed area in a 20` GRP hull boat, i would have thought there should always be some escape route to cope with any water ingress, i cant find any limber holes connecting that area to the rear bilge pump

get your boat off the ground to evaluate the hole. Have a blow dryer or pressure air pumps used for pool toys. Get the material to be filled ready. make some shavings drilling multiple holes. Straighten out one shavings fir up the heat source and weld. Later use wood working tools to smooth your repair
 
Hi emma ,the boats out of the water at the moment and there is no holes in the hull at all, otherwise the water would have escaped I imagine , i think its a leak from above somewhere, as ive just bought the boat i dont yet know how bad it is , that could have been two years worth of water i removed :-/
 
Inspection hatches come in many shapes and sizes

Most will close tight, some designed for floor mounting - ie. tolerate walking on.

If usable a hatch would also allow for storage in the room.

PS! Take care when drilling! Clearance between floor and hull might not be as great as you think (don't ask..)
