Hello!
Hoping someone can advise on water purification.
We have a water tank that holds 375l - what does everyone else add to purify the water so that it remains safe for drinking. (We also have a Brita filter water tap).
So far I have been adding Aquaclean tabs, but the tank requires 15 tabs at a time - just wondered if there is any other product that would be better?
Cheers!

I've never added anything but tap water to my tank. I drink it cold, clean my teeth with it etc., no problems in over ten years. Tablets can leave a funny taste so that put me off.
If I haven't used the boat for a while I run the tap to flush the pipes and top it up regularly(giving the hose a good flush through before filling up)
My Dad uses tablets in his campervan tank. Which is why he needs bottled water to make the tea!

This is an often aired subject on the PBO Reader to Reader forum

My preferred water purification treatment is Milton Fluid , or a supermarket own brand equivalent, as used for babies feeding bottles , at the rate of 5 mls per 10 litres. The water is fit to drink after 30 minutes .......... unless you over dose it.

It is not economical to use Milton for sterilising a tank ( at 60mls per 10 litres). An un-thickened domestic bleach is a more sensible choice which, being more concentrated, should be used at 25 mls per 10 litres and thoroughly rinsed out after 15 minutes

Large size Aquatabs. Have to search about a bit for them. 1 will do 300 - 500 litres. Well, does for us. Also have a Jabsco in line filter that manages the taste of the water.

Citric acid is a good and cheap way of descaling the whole system which improves water quality.

Buy a 2kg bag from Ebay, mix with warm water and pour in, running the taps a bit.

Come back a week later and flush it out into buckets, then throw it into the toilet, pipes and black tank for another week, where it will remove all the sludge.

Citric acid is a food grade powder, no taste, no harm to your boats bits either, and should cost under £10. Once the scale has gone, theres less places for bacteria and crud to collect.

Transformed my boat toilets performance, freed off the diverter valves and other taps...

Then you can use minimal aqua tabs once you're using the water regularly!

edit £13.99 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citric-A...hash=item4afb8794e8:m:m_N2avLfBa9wUivJ7HY7S1w

FWIW I use a hydrogen peroxide and silver system for cleaning spraying equipment and greenhouses of algae and moulds.

From time to time a litre of Endosan 50 finds its way down to the boat where it keeps the tanks and pipes free from any biological nasties. The most useful deployment is in a small 0.7l garden spray bottle used for a final misting over the heads compartment and the galley where most biological growths are likely to take place.

Hydr per is not toxic when it has done its work, it does not leave chemical residues, or the alkaline smell of bleach and similar products.

It is also extremely good at sterilising scratches from barnacles and scrapes on board.

Wot he said. Add nothing

+1.............. never used any additives ever.

However fortunate enough to be able to ensure a fairly high and constant replenishment of fresh water.
throughout the year.
Ingestion of fluids on our boat involves a bottle opener, corkscrew or in really desperate cases the kettle.
All other H20 needed comes direct from the galley tap.

The guys that make Aquaclean Tabs also make some very large tabs of the same composition to treat large tanks. We used to use them and they are very convenient, but they are not widely stocked. Try mail order.

Did wonder just how long the curious " affectation " of bottled water could last.
Having left most of our highways, byways and waterways looking like rubbish tips, the ability of bottled water companies to extract cash from the gullible for basic H20 always impressed me.
However, looking at the market for this snake oil, wonder if their customers will even notice ?
