Water temp alarm on elbow?

I've heard mention of an inexpensive water temp alarm that can be fitted to the exhaust elbow. My MD7 has a temp gauge but no alarm and I want more peace of mind. Does anyone know anything about this and can perhaps quote part numbers, etc. Can these components be sourced from Maplin rather than the boat world? I suppose I really only need the sensor/sender and a piezo buzzer?

Regards, Mudhook

www.asapsupplies.co.uk do them, they slip under the hose I think, always a bit expensive I've thought. Why not fit a Water Flow Meter just before the sea water pump, then as soon as the flow stops, the alarm sounds and absolutely no overheating!
RS and Farnell do the flow meters and probably Maplins as well - about £18 each if I remember. I do have a copy of the arrangement at home - PM me if interested and I'll post you a copy.(But I am on holiday as from this afternoon!)

RS sell a stainless steel temp sensitive switch - normally open (probably half the size of a wine bottle cork) for about £3. Sits very nicely on my exhaust elbow and needs only, as you say, a sounder and an earth & supply.

I have previously used the temperature sender to be found at the bottom of a car radiator, that drives the electric fan and available at any scrapyard for nowt. This was coupled to a car horn from the same scrapyard - and this worked very effectively. The sensor was glued on with Araldite which seemed to do the trick.

Index Marine do an exhaust temperature alarm that does not involve fixing the sensor inside the exhaust.

pinched this from westerly owners @ yahoo. Works a treat on me AB1W
I have used a s/s jubilee clip to attach sensor to Elbow

Its easy to make a temperature sensed alarm for less than £10
Use these devices from CPC www.cpc.co.uk

THERMAL SWITCH N/O 50C SN3582366 or from RS components 228-2557

PIEZO BUZZER 12V/LEADS LS0107966

The piezo alarm buzzer is wired to a fused 12 volts supply through the
temperature switch.
When the temperature rises above 50 degrees (or the value of whatever
device in the range you select), the switch closes and the alarm sounds.
When the temperature falls the switch opens and the alarm stops.

Hi Dickh!

Entirely agree. I've had this system for many years and on two occasions it has prevented possible damage to the motor by setting off the separate alarm we fitted.

Dirt cheap solution to ensuring water flow, with the advantage as you state, of the warning of water interruption coming at the earliest point!

Good sailing!

http://www.thermometersdirect.co.uk/index.htm From an idea from this forum, I bought a max/min thermometer from these people.

I've taped the sensor to top of the exhaust elbow of my YSE12 with duct tape. I've direct reading of the exhaust temperature, as well as a thermometer for the boat. The normal thermo switch is wired to a light and a bell. If I do fail to see the temperature rise on the thermometer, I've still got the usual warning.

Simple, cheap and effective.
