Vic - do you flush the milton treated water out after 30 mins or can it be drunk?
I'm working on removing the plastic taste of the tank as well as nice tasting water /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I'm planning white Vinegar solution treatment and leave over night. followed by empty and fill with milton solution - leave for a hour or so, empty and refil from the tap.
When I bought my boat some years back I had nasty smells from the taps, flushed the tank several times including some bleach but muck just kept on coming through. Eventually took the tank home and washed it out and was horrified at the amount of black gunge that appeared, so much so that I decided to replace said tank. It was really disgusting, ever since have always had a separate small rigid container for all drinking water.

[/ QUOTE ] The "2.5 mls per 5 l and leave for 30 mins" is the treatment for drinking water. For tank cleaning you would want to use several times that volume of Milton, that water would then be drained after a soak and preferably a bit of a shake up, the tank flushed, and the final fill dosed at the above rate. Please don't ask me to put a numerical value on "several" though. 5, 10 maybe depending how bad you think the tank is.
It may not be possible to completely drain the tank so it may require a fair bit of flushing to get rid of the high concentration before you do the final fill in fact it may not be necessary to do the final dose at all. It is what I would do if I was filling a tank that was just a bit suspect or with water that was suspect.
None of this is a substitute for mechanically removing loads of crud which has accumulated in a tank over many years of course. In an earlier contribution to this thread I mentioned dosing the water in the tank on a freinds boat. I should add that the boat is almost 30 years old and the tank has never actually been cleaned. We normally empty out as much as possible at the end of the season, but that probably leaves 1 to 2 inches of water in it. Then when we refill it in the spring we leave a couple of taps running to waste for a while as the fresh water goes in. It's more of a gesture than anything else. Although the owner's son refuses to drink the water from the tank, preferring bottled water, I always have done
I personally would not use vinegar because I dislike the smell and taste of it (Definitely no vinegar on my chips thank you!) but if you do make sure you do not get vinegar and Milton mixed or you will release chlorine gas which as you know is very toxic.
