Apart from the factory fitted canister type of water separator on my Mercruiser I'm also fitting an extra inline fuel/water separator. The filter came with two brass screw in nipples to take the fuel line, in and out. There are no actual instructions with the filter, except a note on the label to the effect that the correct nipple must be installed, relative to the fuel flow.

The filter has no "in" or "out" markings anywhere and the two nipples are different, in that, one has a hole in the straight tube section that would be inside the actual filter, after the threaded section and the other nipple has no hole. Both threads are the same and "in" and "out" is just determined by position or orientation.

So, my question is, which nipple is "in" and which is "out".

Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that one of the nipples/spigots does not have a non-return valve in it as that would make installation obvious?

If neither has a NRV but one has an extra hole in it then I would assume that is probably the inlet spigot and the hole is something to do with creating a flow in the separator but it really depends what is actually inside the separator.

So, I took a look see and discovered that the nipple with the hole in it is the "in" nipple. How do I know this? Cos the word "In" is stamped on the nipple and for confirmation, the word "Out" is stamped on the other nipple. Doh!!!

Thanks for the responses.
