Water Pump Seal

I am about to replace the seal on the water pump of my Volvo 2020. Im hoping its just the seal thats gone and not a worn shaft as mentioned in other threads!
The seal has a metallic reinforcement and I notice the one I removed had the reinforcing part exposed to the inside of the water pump. Is this the norm? I would have expected it to be turned away from the salt water.

sounds correct
the spring is on the containing side

if it were fitted other way it would not seal

Makes sense, I suppose it was the gunge build up that got me thinking it might be wrong, thanks Scottie

Make sure you get a seal with a stainless spring if you can. - you can ususally get them from Bearing Services Ltd or similar Bearing distributor in your area
