Does anyone know if it possible to recondition engine waterpumps ? The one on my Volvo MD22L failed in Sicily and a new one cost €520 at the local Volvo d(st)ealers. I dug out the old one yesterday and thought it would do as a spare if I could get it repaired. Dont like the idea of buying another for half a grand a piece.

Is this the raw water pump or the fresh water pump. If its the raw water pump with rubber vane type impeller you can bearings are standard and seals are standard size but specify the spring in the seal to be copper not the normal steel (check with magnet) the only special part is the impeller assuming the shaft and body are not damaged.

If its the fresh water check with base engine manufacture it may be based on a car/truck engine and so motor spairs supplier may supply exchange replacement,

Try "ASAP" supplies on line they stock most pump impellors, e-mail them with the pump make and ref, (most pumps have it on the side)
I use them regularly and recommend them no problem.
but as Roger says tell them is it raw or fresh water pump.
Most impellors with rubber bonded vains can not be repaired but they are about £20 to £30 for most sizes, so buy 2
Good luck
Mike

A lot of pumps fail eventually due to corrosion on the shaft and this allows water past the seal. There was a good article a couple or so years ago in PBO on how to recover from this without great expense.

Just done the same thing for my engine, Volve MD22, but my answer is based on doing the job in the UK, check with the supplier if the do Sicily. If it is the same pump as mine this link
http://www.jabscoshop.com/item.asp?ls=1001&v=7394DEE09E914995AC8D2600CCB4CFF9&id=2265
should give you pump details, cost for new and spares. If not do a web search on Jabscoshop and look for this pump model 29500-1001, PUMP 28MM BRZ 40 FLANGE on there website.

Peter

This is the fresh water pump

Thanks for your replys lads. This is the fresh water pump on the front of the engine. It looks like the flange for the pulley would have to be pressed off to get at the bearings and seal. Just wondered if there was a company repairing these.

The water pipes go in and out at very different places so they have you by the short n curlys every time. The MD22 is basically a British made Perkins Prima engine used in Austin Montego cars and some vans too. Volvo use their own soft crappy marinising parts on it. Practically every volvo part attached to my engine has failed including the gearbox. The engine itself is sweet as a nut.
