Hi folks,

I will be replacing the impeller in our Volvo 2002 ,18 hp,have done this before, but this time decided to read the little instruction manuel included with the new part. The instructions mention lubricating the lip seal with the included glycerin but not the mechanical seal .I'm not sure what is meant by the mechanical seal. The only seal seems to be the paper gasket between the pump body and cover plate which is held in place with the four screws. Not sure what is meant by lip seal and mechanical seal or if the manuel covers a variety of different pump types and the instructions not all relevent .Any advice please.

Many thanks

Windswept Rob, its blowing old boots on east coast today.

Hi,
The lubricant is really for the rubber imeller to ease fitting it in the body of the pump. The cover joint is brown paper and it is generally advisable to lightly grease both sides to aid keeping it in place as you offer up and fit the cover plate and to make it easier to remove when next dismantled. The lip seals are the driver shaft seals that prevent the ingress of oil from the sump into the pump and or sea water going the other way. Once you have assembled the pump and try it check to ensure there are no leaks from the cover area and also drips from under the body of the pump which would signify that either the oil or water lip seal is leaking and needs to be replaced. Details on this can be found by Googling "Volvo Penta 2002" which should lead you to websites with free parts listings and more information including assembly drawings.

Cheers!

Both the owners manual and the workshop manual can be found at http://www.bluemoment.com/downloads.html

I did not see anything helpful in them but post the info for future reference.

exploded parts diagrams can be found at http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-cat-7726000.aspx

I think reference to a "mechanical seal" must be for a different pump on different engine. On the 2000 series the raw water pumps have two lip seals, as said one keeping oil in the crankcase the other keeping water in the pump.

Note the orientation of these seals if you remove /replace them. The sprung lips face the oil and the water respectively.

I'd guess that the seal on the freshwater pump would be described as a mechanical seal .
