water pump going when the water is hot

Last time that happened to me it was a bit of plastic on the fresh water pump inlet valve.

That will cause the pump to keep cycling sure enough but why only when the calorifier heats up. I'd expect the same effect hot or cold.

Maybe the increase in pressure from the calorifier contents warming up results in a greater leak rate and more frequent pumping. But then my system gave an occasional buzz every few hours. Since fixing, it never re-pressurises until a tap is turned on.

For the sake of anyone coming across this thread here's the answer.

My system is slightly different to VicS's diagram. Rather than having a pump with integrated pressure switch I have a pump with a separate pressure switch between the pump and accumulator which also acts as a non-return valve. Those bubbles going backwards through the system made me suspect the non-returnines of the non-return valve so I took it off and took it apart. It *looked* OK but water could in fact drip backwards. Nowhere had the £13 service kit for the switch in stock but the local chandler did me a deal on a new switch for about 60% more than the kit. Presto. No more cycling pump.
