OK I've broke it ! Replacing the water pump seal on my Yanmar 1GM10, I discovered that when I screwed the pump back on to the engine casing, a small piece of the casing has broken off !! and there is nothing for one of the bolts to attach to !!
What do I do now ??
There is still water "pouring" out of the side of the pump (well dripping a lot) and I've tried simple silicon sealer without much effect.
Please tell me the engine isn't kn@*#r'd

I hate that sinking feeling you get when things like this happen. I have had success with epoxy putty in a similar situation. The water pump on my 1GM had been leaking slowly for a long time before I bought it and the alloy casing it screws to had corroded so badly that there was no longer a good face to give an oil seal. One of the screw holes was also badly affected. After thoroughly cleaning and degreasing I bulit up the area with epoxy putty, drilled and tapped the affected thread oversized and then carefully filed the face flat and level to accept the pump body. I also cut a cork gasket to help with the oil seal (original just an inset O-ring). This was fairly easy on the bench, but would be less so in the boat. Important to avoid getting swarf and filings into the crank case, I found a greased rag inserted into the cavity collected it quite effectively. In your case if you have a hole to fill you could try reinforcing the epoxy with some wire mesh.

As for the leaking water pump. These are quite easy to dismantle. Seals (water and oil) are quite cheap considering they are yanmar parts. The shaft may be worn where it runs in the water seal, if so you can either replace or do as I did and make up a gasket/spacer to sit behind the waterseal (only needs to be a mm or so thick) so that the seal lip bears on a different part of the shaft.

Both repairs have so far proved successful.

Good luck with yours, I am sure a new alloy casing from Yanmar would be painful.

Thanks for that - you've made me think of "Plastic Padding" metal filler / builder which I hope will have a suitable marine use and probably be easier to handle on the engine in situ on the boat.
I think I've sorted the pump itself i.e. new o-ring and "instant gasket" type stuff, but it'll be no use if I can't get it attached to the engine !

You could try a slightly smaller socket e.g. 9mm or 8mm or even 3/8 or 5/16 instead of the 10mm bolt that's there.
I've also had some success with one of those extractor thingys that you can screw into the remaining body of the bolt. You can buy them from any good DIY.
All with plenty of WD40 of course.

good luck
