Water pump cover

The water pump cover on my 20hp Beta is getting a little too scored for my liking.It still works well but it'll have to be replaced soon.I can reverse it but the outside is engraved with the name of the make.I can easily make a stainless steel replacement on my workshop and use the Speedseal design as inspiration but I don't know if stainless steel works well for this application.Any advice?

I made one for the Yanmar 1GM10 in my last boat out of 8mm thick stainless steel, I turned a groove in it to take a thin O ring instead of the thin paper gasket I also made some brass knurled barrels,drilled and tapped them right through and screwed stainless steel bolts right through them 4mm (I think) and lock-tighted them in so no screw driver needed I also slotted two of the four holes in the cover to make it easier to change. It did not have the spinner plate in it but was no trouble for years up to selling the boat.

Why not just buy the proper thing? The key to the design is the O ring seal. The plate itself is yellow metal (brass or bronze) so you could cut one yourself to the right shape and machine it for the O ring, but that is a lot of faff when you can but one off the shelf.

If you just want a replacement cover still using the paper gasket stainless would be OK.

I could buy the proper thing and its fairly priced and all but I have had this aversion to spending money since 2008.By the way I haven't made or used a proper gasket in years.I stick a few strips of white paper masking tape and then cut off the inside area following the wear marks on the cover.It takes 5 minuts to make and never drips.

If your workshop has a lathe you could do what I did when my bronze cover plate became scored. I mounted it in the lathe and skimmed it.

Unfortunately I dont have a lathe but I do have a milling machine.I can mill it flat.

Just reverse it, i would check the wear plate behind the impeller too ( remove the cam to get at it )

I can reverse it but I'm afraid the engraved letters on the outside might damage the impeller,or won't it?
