you need imho 3x 100am Mastervolt chargers ganged in parallel. Maybe even 4. If you don't spec that as well as the batteries (maybe you have specced it, sorry), You'll have nothing like the charge rate that you want for avoiding high genset run time, and you'll be feeding charge to the batteries much slower than their max acceptance rate. I would guess the standard spec on your boat is a pair of 80amp chargers; you need much more than that imho[/QUOTE]

Unfortunately Fairline wouldn't fit 3 x 100am chargers, they said there is simply not the room on the ER bulkhead - so I just have 2 x 100am instead of the standard 1 x 80am. Obviously that means 4 hours to half fill the batts (which will be set to cut out at 50% anyway so as not to damage them) but I'm hoping the combination of charging underway and then when at anchor will mean 2-3 genny hours a day will be enough. We'll see!

Yep I can see their space problem, though I cant picture the s65 e/room precisely. On my 58 I made a rack so I could mount one right in front of the other and swing it like the page of a book to get to the one behind. The charger is stbd side engine room, you might recall.

The charge acceptance of batteries is far from linear. With your 880AH bank (880@24v, that is) discharged down to say 40% you can probably squirt 350Amps@24v into them, but as they approach full (say 80%) you might not even get your available 200amps into them. Hence, if you pursue the policy of recharging when they're far from empty you have less need of my suggestion to gang up 3 or 4 fat chargers and you'll find your 2x100amps chargers generally ok. I pursue a different policy of murdering the batteries down to nearly empty and then their charge acceptance is massive so I want to squirt hundreds of amps into them

BTW, one of your 100amp chargers will be 80+10+10, same as mine. It has 2x 10amp slave outputs to trickle charge the engine batts. I think the main output is only 80 amps, not the full 100, even when the slave outputs are taking no charge, but I'm not 100% sure about that and could never find a definitive answer in the mastervolt literature

Finally, your maths is wonky Milo (sorry for pedantry!). Your 1600 is @12v. Really you have 880AH@24v. Your chargers are 200A @24v. Therefore 4 hours would almost fill them (assuming linear full charge acceptance, as you were assuming, but which isn't really true of course). Using your linear acceptance maths it only needs 2 hours to half fill them, not 4. So that's twice as good as you thought! Happy to be of service in giving you this random good news! :D:D

The UK agent is Fisher Panda ( I have a contact available by PM if needed) .

The list on this is £8166 + VAT, they offered it for 6533+vat and also added the Voyager pack ( fresh water flush, remote controls etc) at a good discount ( list : £790 + VAT)

For what is it, it is still a chunk of change, but the discount made it more palatable, and bought it in line with the cheaper brands. The USA on line price is $11500, so the discount seems genuine.

That looks like a great deal. The auto flush and remote pack is pretty essential imho. You'll be very pleased with it, and anyway it is FL's OEM spec which is handy
 
I run the watermaker in the marina all the time, given intake is about 1m under the surface and 3m above the bottom I assume i miss out on both bits of rubbish.

Milo why didnt you go for the Mastervolt Lithium batteries. My boss has ordered new boat and top of my hit list was a decent battery solution. I have to say this stuff whilst expensive is pretty sexy and weighs nothing. I think we save 1000kg in battery weight alone. Also the linear charging means fewer generator hours so less fuel usage. I know on MOBO not a problem as one fills up regulalry but on new boat we wont have that.

I did look at the lithium option but two things put me off - a) the cost was, I think, about £4k per 200 ah battery (versus £800 for each gel) but, more importantly b) I heard quite a few people concerned about the instability of lithium, particularly when in a confined space near water! So all in all I just though gel was more tried and tested..., and cheaper!!!
