Water-makers - 3 questons -Noise, Run times & Idle periods

Not wanting to hi jack the thread but is anyone using the Shenker unit?
Also I've seen an Eco Sistem WM on the net 30lpm for £2995-12volt. Any thoughts on this unit?

I made a 220v Wm very noisy and had to run a generator. It is my intention to strip it out and fit and energy recovery model.

I considered the Shenker but went for the Spectra after getting horror stories about the after sales service in the UK.

We have an Echotec 240v system powered by a Pajero 4000, now in its fourth year both units so far trouble free. Used mostly every 2 days, has been as long as 10 days between use but only after a flush with product water, if its not going to be used for more than 10 days (marina bound) its pickled. All we have done to the water maker is change the oil and washed the filters once a season, the Genset gets an oil change every 100 hrs, new impellor every 300. All our fuel is treated with fuelset, fuel filters are always clean when we cut them open so we stopped changing them.

Very useful information and good to hear you're pleased with your setup. Since doing the original post some months ago I have ordered an Echotec 230v system to run off my Paguro gen set or inverter. Plan to fit in Autumn this year,
Dave

You wont be disappointed with Echotec equipment its very simple and built to outlast the universe. We are in Turkey in the autumn, if you need any encouragement with the install give me a PM. I think you may find running it off an inverter could be an ask too far for your batteries!

I plan to disassemble it in the UK and fly it out in stages wef Sept. I will be installing it and have already fitted the though hulls. Whilst I have a good idea of where I will locate the components (690 AML2) modular unit, I'd welcome a chat or look at your set up before I commit. Thanks for the offer of advice; are you anywhere near Marmaris?
I come out to the boat next week and will be sailing for a few weeks between Finike and Leros.

I take your point re the drain on the batteries if running RO off the inverter (4kw) but the domestic bank is 24v 480Ah and occasionally it should cope with the 230v x 4.5 amp running current. I'm no electrician and have no definitive figures for the efficiency of the the inverter, however, my calculations are that if I'm running the engine, its domestic battery alternator (110 amp) will supply what the RO is drawing. Essentially this gives me 3 possible methods of providing power for the watermaker.
Cheers

I live in Fethiye so not far from Marmaris, a nice drive out there would be nice. Your calculations re the inverter, I make it around 70amps constant draw on your battery bank with slightly more at start up (around double) to give you the 1.5KW you need for the motor. You have the same watermaker as me, so maybe 2 possible methods of powering it.

The rough maths assuming we are dealing with common or garden lead acid technology, be it, Antimony, Calcium, AGM, Spiral or GEL; some are more tolerant of heavy discharge (ALLEGEDLEY) but in the end its all lead acid technology in a super new wrapper.

You have a 480AH 24v system, 50% discharged it has 240AH left that you don't use (annoying isn't it) but in reality to ensure long battery life you don't want to drop much below 300AH (33% discharged). Lets guess the battery is at 85% charged giving you 408AH of which useable capacity is 108Ah before you run the batteries too low, so on inverter alone you could manage 1hr 30mins maybe.

Will do look forward to it. Give YC a call before you go he's been faffing around with charges lately, there's not enough money in the world for me to moor there! (at the moment). There is a very good anchorage due south of YC very secure if you take a couple of lines ashore.
