I need to fit a larger diameter raw water inlet into my hull and want to replace it with one of those scoop strainers, oval shaped.

The daft question is:

Which way round does it go, Long scoop facing aft, or the long scoop facing fwd, I would have thought the latter so that the fwd motion helps to push water up the tube, although I seem to remember something about keeping it out of the flow in PBO or something, does it matter ??.

I walked around the yard today but not many boats left and they all had round inlets.

I know it's a bit of a daft one, but any wise bods have any thoughts.

Apparently a slow boat has scoop facing forward; a fast boat has it facing aft - otherwise ram effect is too great. I assume fast means planing hull and slow means displacement boat.

On my own boat (30' cat) when i got it they were facing backwards, but i found that after a period of fast sailing/surfing it sucked my strainer dry and when i started the engines they overheated, turned them forward problem disappeared, could be i had a small leak in the system, i don't know, needless to say the problem no longer exists, my raw water strainers are quite away above the waterline so i have no idea if this multiplied the problem......keith

mine was installed facing forward, but the problem was that if any piece of paper etc came against the inlet it was then held there by water pressure. so i reversed it and had the bulge forward and the gradual slope aft. no more blockage problems and no water starvation either.

I have two water inlets for sale at half normal retail price plus some stop cocks. Brand new, bought as a job lot. If you are interested send me a PM detailing size required. Cheers. Paul

I was a little unsure of this too when I changed my water inlet this spring, so I sneaked a look at other boats: they were all with the bulgy bit forward and the narrower part aft. That's how I put mine, and no probs so far.
