Havent had the boat long but noticed that after 2 1/2 hours at sea ive got about 1/2 a bucket of water in the bilges, i pump it out and the next time the same thing happens, and only when out, it doesnt appear after a week of not moving. Is this normal for a twin outdrive boat or is it excessive?

Had a similar experience when first got our new boat. Turned out to be water entering via the bilge pump outlet. The hose loop was not high enough and waves hitting side could force water through. Problem cured by fitting a non-return valve between pump and outlet. Now bilge remains dry.

May not be same problem but worth checking.

Have you tried running the engines while stationary, to see if there are any leaks visible?

Look at water pump / hoses / exhaust manifolds / gasket joints and engine block core plugs.

On mine there is a drain hole connecting the forward and aft bilge. When lying level the water just sits in the forward bilge with aft bilge dry, but when getting up on plane it's enough tilt to pour the water through the drain from forward to aft.

I'd check to see if you had water in the forward bilge area that may be draining backwards when boat is bow up.

Bet you any money you like that if you have any jabasco pumps. It is the seal on the shaft of the raw water pump.Drip drip drip when under way.

Ian you wont like this but im afraid its engines out, legdoff etc, the chances are very high that it is the steering shaft seals at the top of the transom shield, run the boat forward with someone looking in that area, then slow to a stop and watch the water come in, you could try greasing them but its usually too late, another winter project if it is, did the boys at Motor tech do the last job, ask if they fitted any seals while the motors were out, I have just done a Targa 33 engine out job etc, same thing done.

Cheers Paul, oh and watch it in Newtown next time, buy the book Solent hazards byPeter Bruce, its really good and worth it., compared to a new prop!.

I had a similar problem in the past when I had my new boat, for the first year the RAW water filter used to leak, this was fixed by Sealine - however their advice was to use Vaseline around the Raw water filter seal every time it is checked, so worth a check.

Pauljs, is it not possible to check the steering seal while stationary by moving it left to right? Anyway I centainly cringed at Pauljs answer - brings back bad memories!
