Water filter on hand pump sink.

Before looking at carbon filters, I'd try and eliminate the source of the bad taste. If the tank is a good quality one, then it is likely that the water, or the pipework, has been contaminated.

A good dose of Milton, or hydrogen peroxide, some busy activation, and flush through. a couple of times should clear any bacterial causes.

There are numerous large filter bodies and cartridges from e.g. Plumb Centre, which will work with a hand pump.

Hi davidpbo

I currently have a Jabsco Aquafilter fitted to my hand pumped water system which seems to remove the various obnoxious flavours that come through the water system. I have also in the past used the Whale Aquasource filters with much the same effect.
I have also found that Aquasol added to the tank seems to taste less than puritabs, but that might be just my poor sense of taste.
Of course neither of these filters purify the water so it’s still really only suitable for consumption after boiling, we still carry bottled water for drinking.

Yes you can. Visit your local caravan shop and they will be delighted to sell you an in line filter. The method of pumping is irrelevant.

In the Med on our previous boat with bags they were cleaned every 2 years with Puriclean powder and well wrinsed out after. We then put nothing in other than fresh water ie. No tablets etc water fine for cooking and tea. Had cans and bottles for drinking water. This with 2 X 150l bags. Of course you did need taste the water going in before hand. The only issue we found was around Epidhavros and Poros area.

Best way to avoid the chlorine taste is to not put it in the water. I don't put anything at all in my tanks, other than water from the marina tap. My water tastes like, erm, water and i can drink it straight from the tap. As you have cleaned and treated the system, flushing it should now get rid of the chlorine taste.

That said, my boat is one the East coast of the UK. I would likely adopt a different strategy if i was filling up the tanks from less reliable sources.

Whilst not knocking Paul and Sarabande's approaches, the use of chlorine etc. shouldn't result in an ongoing chlorine taste.

We usually clean our tanks & pipes with Puriclens or similar (think I used Milton once) annually, empty, then fill & flush twice with clean water afterwards, then fill again for use. Can't remember ever tasting it. (This relates to rigid tanks, GRP and stainless, only.)
