Watching TV abroad on Ipad

For some reason completely beyond me , the Boss wants to watch UK television (not even rugby or cricket ) when we are on the Med boat. We have Sky at home and there are gizmos that we can attach to the set up there which , allegedly , re-route the channels that she selects from Spain to our Ipads. I have already discovered our 3G is better than the pitiful WiFi in the Marina so am relaxed we have the capacity to receive the programme , just need any advice on:
Do they work?
Is one make any better?
Are they reasonably user friendly ? (she is a gorgeous woman and a great skipper but no-one in their right mind would describe her as a technophile)
Can I screen the programmes to avoid fat people with no teeth shouting and screaming at each other ?

There are issues with the iPad, as Apple does not support Flash software, which most video's use. Therefore you cannot use iPlayer with the iPad or screen BBC on it at the moment. In reality this is not a problem in the med, as you can only use the service from a UK ISP, cannot view overseas.

iPads are fantastically easy to use, very intuitive, good screens, except you can't see much in bright sunlight.

Can't talk about the competitors, although I believe the Android tablets can run flash.

I can run Iplayer from the Beeb on my Ipad, I know this as I just started that documentary about fat people with no teeth screaming at each other to test this out (Eastenders I believe it is called M'lud). In fact , I looked at proxy ISP but , if I can get the sky down there , I will have the advantage of , when I prise her hands off it , I can watch 30 grown men beating each other up

The OP mentioned that his better half is not a geek (not in so many words), I would say the same about my lovely wife. Bright that she is, if I told my wife to set up a UK vpn from her iPad, I would receive some very old fashioned looks, and probably end up wearing her iPad as well!

She has tried the iplayer app, with no success. You, may well be a genius, but I know my limitations when it comes to the iPad. I replied to the OP with my experience, that is why this forum works well, as your experience is better than mine. Well done. No need for insults though

Simples.

You just buy a Slingbox. Plug it in at home. Dowload the Slingplayer Ap from iTunes and it works fine.

Their software is very intuitive and you will have no difficulty setting up unless you have some old obscure router.

I've used it all over the world but be careful with data costs on 3G. It cost me £35 just to watch a penalty shoot out once!

Download the uktv app it was free, there quite a few recent programs just looked and last night eastenders on it.

Or "sky go", if your sky customer again good choice, the blind side is on my iPad as I type this

I use TVCatchup on iPhone and I know it can be used on iPad.. Full freeview channels.

Maybe I'm missing something but why go for a sling box when you can download the FilmOn app for free on your ipad and watch that in Spain (it works I've tried it)
I've used WiFi but not 3G so I'm interested if people get streaming problems with 3G.

I went to load filmOn, and all the reviews say the latest release doesn't work at all well. TV catchup works well for me here, but I don't know if it works outside UK?

Er - yes you can ... there's even a BBC iPlayer app ...

Although to watch the Beeb from abroad you're going to need a UK presence - normally done through a VPN

Other methods include the slingbox - but I'm not sure what they're like

How reliable is the VPN using 3g? I use a VPN for work when remote from the office, and it regularly drops out, worse when using my phone card. I could imagine this being really frustrating if trying to view something.
