For anyone thinking of heading to Watchet:

Cardiff Harbour Authority has been informed that, owing to a significant fault with the marina lock gate, access to Watchet Marina is severely restricted. Mariners seeking access to the marina are advised to make contact with marina staff well in advance of their anticipated visit to determine when access may be possible. This advice will remain in force until further notice.

Watchet Marina may be contacted on Tel 01984 631264 or 07969 138938.

If anyone's wondering, the marina has not become tidal - ie no water at low tide. They are keeping the water in with the maintenance stop logs, but this is what is restricting access.

They said they were hoping to reopen the marina as normal sometime next week. They managed to get the hydraulic ram off yesterday (although they seemed to be working on it all night) and it is now sat in the hydraulics factory being refurbished.

I was quite impressed that they did all that in one afternoon pretty much by themselves with just one engineer to help them. Think they are pretty keen to get it reopened ASAP!

If anyone wants I'll find out more on request.

If you go over to Cardiff, they take your email address as part of the berth booking process. Stuart then emails some useful information every Friday.

Looking on the bright side its good that the problems occured now instead of summertime.Except of course for the poor sods down there working on it with frozen fingers.

Marina open again as usual. Gate fixed and seems to be ok.
Limited staffing over xmas but not actually shut.

V impressed with how fast they got it all up and running again.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

you really have to wonder about the viability of Watchet with problems like this and the need for regular and expensive dredging. They dont have a lot of boats in there to spread the cost over.

a few years ago members of the planning authority and Dean and Dyball were entertained by the Fishermans Co-operative. Surprise consent !

The EU application for funding was never properly followed up, otherwise it would have been sorted properly, rather than being planned by a 16 yr old in an office in New Zealand.

Miaow !
