Watchet passage plan.

Look forward to seeing you there, I will be sailing Cobby girl over and meeting Edwina and Lilly (SWMBO and her dog) over there. Be aware that the harbourmaster told me this week that the gate should open and close earlier than published.

For me sailing is all about relaxing not rushing to scrape in at the last minute.

With the light winds forecast for the weekend I would leave cardiff on Saturday morning for a gentle sail down to blue anchor bay on the ebb .Anchor or heave too for a couple of hours for a leisurely lunch before a gentle sail back up to Watchet to arrive about 1530 1600 ish .

I know most of you guys have bigger engines than me so look at things differently.

Im working over the weekend or we would have met up with you over there.

Im hoping for a few days sailing starting next Tuesday.By then its big spring tides unfortunately, with the small neaps we have just had the water around here was starting to look quite nice ,a pleasant green instead of the usuall oxtail soup.

We're away diving from this afternoon, but still hoping to sail down to watchet Tuesday morning. If any of you are still around, we'll say hello.

Good point ref. engine. I do all my calcs. on 6knts which is average but really easy to calculate eta.
We are a motor sailer though.
(maybe you didn't know but the RAF fly at speeds divisable by 60 to make nav easier too)

Thanks for the info on early closing. Unfortunately can't get away any earlier hence the rush over, not under sail. We usually plan for 6Kts water speed as she cruises at 6.5 under motor and 6 is pretty easy most of the time under sail.
At least this is not a tidal gate (and hence safety critical) and as such and plan B would be to anchor in Blue Anchor Roads or carry on down to Porlock Weir. Unfortunately as the wind looks a bit light in the bay it will be down to the iron sail. Just spoke the marina and they may close the gate up to 1/2 hr earlier as they do this around springs.
No marina staff will be on as they are down the boat show so if you're arriving outside office hours this weekend best give them a call first to arange key etc.

Hope to see you there.

Just got back after a nice weekend. It was nice to meet up with Neil. I left Friday on the 13-30 barrage and arrived at Watchet 17-00 after a fantastic sail. We should have sailed back Saturday as the winds were very light today and we had to motorsail most of the way back. We had a short sail mid-morning but the wind dropped from 13kts to zero in about two minutes. Still the sail on Friday was one of the best single handed days I have ever had.

Was nice to meet you Allan, glad your boat went well. We had a great sail back on Saturday, left around 4:15 and just off Penarth two hours later.
Was nice to be out in the sun for a change. One of my colleagues was bringing his boat back from the South coast and had to motor sail up the channel with a 17kt head wind for quite a bit of the time so we definately had the best of it.

Glad the weather Gods were smiling on you for a change.Hope you guys didnt drink all the beer as were going over tommorow morning. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

No need to worry about the beer! A combination of sailing single-handed from Cardiff after a busy week and buying a boat I couldn't afford meant that I had little to drink and went to bed early.

Whoever heard of buying a boat you COULD afford.......

I've giot it all sussed. We are going to shoot off in front of Graham, and when he shows off his superior sailing skills and beats us hands down, he'll be first into the pub, won't he?

I've just realised I've made a huge mistake, too. I have 80 pints of bottle conditioned homebrew. The Admiral's revenge at 4.7% and 'Old Home Wrecker' at 4.6%. Problem is with bottle conditioned beer, it doesn't need shaking up, so is not really suitable for marine application. I'll have to find room in the camper van for that lot. Gutted.
