No one so far has mentioned Shotley Point marina. If you are arriving at Harwich after a long and tiring crossing, then Shotley isn't a bad bet. Firstly it's a locked marina, so you'll have a very quiet night; secondly, it has good facilities, particularly the Shipwreck restaurant; thirdly (and crucially) it has baths, real deep hot baths, as well as showers. After a long cold trip, a sleep in a hot bath is lovely!
Sorry Vi, it just shows how memory plays up after years. The quay was made of steel and more like 4mtrs iso 10. The sea was probably closer than 10M also.
I dont know how to post pictures or i would have attached them. I'll try to put them in a PM.
If you make for Lowestoft you will always be made welcome and we will always find somewhere for you. The main advantage is that you can come in day or night without worying about bridges or tides.
We have a web site: rnsyc.co.uk
Email: rnsyc@ctc-net.co.uk

We are an old club with almost every conceivable facility, including a good bar.
It is also a good place to collect your thoughts before exploring down coast which "vyv" so aptly explained. I agree with "xtravert" Pontoon "D" is tight to the concrete wall but up to about a 32 footer should reasonably easily get in. Some of our chaps do it single handed, (yes does help if you do it regularly) but you will always be offered a helping hand.
Sea week is from 18th to 22 August and yes it will get a bit buisy then.
Violleta,
please don't sound so enthusiastic about the Colne & Blackwater Estuary, we'll end up with all the S.coast brigade wanting to come here. By the way if our Dutch visitors do get to the Colne there's a couple of soft mud pontoon moorings at Wivenhoe Sailing club available F.O.C. Showers & Loos in Clubhouse.Currently have two Dutch yachties visiting drawing 1.7m
I would love to see them. memory plays strange tricks. I tried to reply to your PM but whatever I do the "messgaes sent" stays obstinately at 0.
Lots of Dutch yachts in Tollesbury in the summer - many with deep drafts. You would be most welcome if you do decide to come. But do approach near the top of a rising tide.
The Blackwater and Colne are a delight during the week but have been ruined by the racing elite at weekends. Which happens to be the time most us have for sailing.
West Mersea have a large boat racing fleet which has no respect for anyone else other than themselves. I have phoned the club on a number of occasions when some of their so called sailors totally ignore the colregs but nothing ever changes. This depressing theme is covered so regularly by this forum . The Blackwater gets progressively worse from Stone, to Marconi, Lawling, Heybridge and Maldon racing fleets who again think they have the right to do what they like.
The Colne , unfortunately is often covered by racing fleets from the Blackwater apart from their own clubs at Brightlingsea. After Brightlingsea, the river gets narrower and has a large motorboat/skiing area where they are perfectly entitled to use as a designated area.
All the above explains why so many cruisers are using their engines instead of sails. The same goes for the Crouch which at least is recognised as a racing area so you know what to expect. You will be motoring again.
I now intend to get on my high horse. If motorboat sports i.e. sking, jet bikes and fast motoring are restricted why are not cruisers and racers ?
The only river where you can have a decent sail at the weekend is the Stour. Funnily enough, the Orwell , which is the most crowded river ( but mainly cruisers and motorboats) is not bad despite being narrow and frequented by large commercial vessels . This proves that high usage can still work if we all respect each other. Unfortunately, in the high season , racing rears it’s ugly head and changes everything again.
The RYA which is supposed to govern ALL forms of recreational water sports knows about this but chooses to do absolutely nothing about it . Why ? because it exists largely for racing and getting British sailors at the forefront of the Olympics etc. Would you allow racing cars on public roads whilst we are there ?
I would strongly urge all sailors to withdraw funding from the RYA until they start to do something about it. You would do much better giving it to the RNLI and other wonderful volunteer life saving groups.
What British sailors need is a new boating organization that will give a square deal to all forms of boating.
