A couple of YMs back L P suggested that forks should be washed separately from the rest of the cutlery. Why????
I lose sleep at night pondering on this weighty problem!
Have I missed summat yet again?
Or is it an early air jet water bump thing???

Don't know if it was what LP was on about and did not see the article, but think it may be to do with the Jewish Sabbath and what constritutes work and what does not constitute work on that day. All very complicated but from what I can gather activities are broken into categories which allow certain activities to not be classed as work.

I think out of that comes if you wash the forks separately it is not classed as "work" - whether that is a correct interpretation within the faith or just a convenient story for others to tell I do not know.

Maybe someone in the Jewish faith or who knows a bit about it could clarify - I would be interested to find out too.

while the lady in question usually talks a lot of good sense, she and husband do have some fairly barmy ideas now and then. not letting toothpaste go down the sink for fear of a blockage being one such. the case you mention isn't one of these however - she was quoting from a 1925 cruising manual!

i think of late she's been struggling a bit with topics for her column, not having the 'non boaty' option that we enjoy here. i'm sure we'll have a lot about singlehanding over the next few months as husband is doing the STAR.
 
If she were Jewish and Kosher I think she'd have twin sinks! But I'm no expert (ie not Jewish). Probably she doesn't like all that saliva soup floating around her sink. If she really needs clean forks the thing to do is wash them twice. Once in soapy water and once in plain water. But we all knew that.
 
That might explain why we have twin sinks then - we lick the plates too, so they will make saliva soup as well /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I understood it to mean each fork should be washed individually, rather than a handfull of forks held and washed at once...

Well I think its quite simple. If you wash up with forks in the washing up basin then it can be a fork in hand full!
