Thanks for the advice - it's almost as good as a "which anchor" thread with all the different opinions...

I shall now go away and digest it all to come up with this weekend's cunning plan.

BTW, I'm getting serious grief from SWMBO because I've got so much rope on board. Is there really such a thing as too much string?

Some years ago I bought a cheap snorkling set which came in a string bag. Once a year this is used for rope washing. The rest of the year it is used to keep the beer cold whilst at anchor! A great buy!
I always use fabric conditioner but I have been told it is a bad idea. I've never been told why.

Following this tread I put a braided halyard in the washing machine! The metal snaphook I threaded through the rope so it would not 'whip' around and damage the steel drum.

Result:

The snaphook has rubbed through the braid and the inner is now bulging out --- I have now got to cut off the snaphook and remake the loop!

Might try soaking next time rather than the washing machine..
