I'm posting this not to wind peeps up just as a point of information.

I try to spend at least part of my weekends fishing around Hurst Narrows and have once again come home having had my fillings loosened by about 20 mobos on full chat passing small fishing boats within 10-20 metres. I happen to be OK, I've got a 23' extremely seaworthy craft but others nearby in 16 footers are getting half swamped with mountanous wakes.

I'm sure no one around here does this, so I'm asking that when you are in the bar chatting to others that you ask peeps to have some consideration for others between Sconce to Hurst Point where the majority of fishing vessels are concentrated. Some guys already do, gaining a friendly wave from me, but the vast majority either don't realise the effect that they are having or couldn't give a wossit, getting a less than friendly signal from most of the vessels affected.

Thanks

On the other hand. You've come 50 miles across the sea and come to this narrow chanel. Theres these plonkers fishing, in the only bit of sea you got. Theres miles and miles to fish in. Why pick Picadilly circus!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Of which a lot of has no fish in! We experience the same thing, also in a 23fter so its not a problem but it used to be in our old 14fter, really unpleasant.
More annoything tho, is the noise generated, scaring most fish away!!

Agree with Haydn. You drop anchor in one of the busiest and narrowest shipping channels in the UK on the first sunny weekend of the season and you expect calm flat water? A trifle optimistic methinks. The mobos in question were probably thinking more about avoiding other traffic than not spilling your coffee

Very little shipping now goes out of Hurst and if you look at the depths you will see it is also unlikely that anyone anchors.

We get the same thing in and around the Medway. We too have a 23 footer. The wife was quite badly scalded on the feet by a pan of hot stew last year, when the Medway pilot boat came past us at full chat no more than 50 yards away, we were half a mile from the channel up on the Cant. I suppose he was getting out the tide. Nobody has any manners anymore.

Don't worry - we get drift fishers in the entrance of Chichester Harbour ... don't know how they do it ... so many boats going past I'm sure the fish are not hungry at all!

Lucky you were not a bit further round towards Keyhaven, there was some twat in a RIB who thought it was a good idea to run multiple waterskiers between me anchored (and a few others) and the beach being all of about 15mtrs away!

Can't say your fishing spot is where I would settle for a nice afternoons fishing, sorry.

Well, I'm glad that you think I'm a plonker that kind of confirms my opinion. As I said at the outset I'm only trying to put forward another view. no one has an absolute right to the water, including me, all I was asking for was a bit of tolerence. I accept that it is a busy place and don't expect to have the place to myself. And yes it happens to be one ofthe few places where there are decent numbers of fish.

I don't agree about avoiding traffic, my craft does 30 knots and I have never needed to get that close to another boat, if I was to be picky I'd say it was because you weren't looking far enough ahead or thinking of the consequences of your actions.

I'll see your plonker and raise it to a pair of plonkers /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Chris,

Isn't this a little like buying a house near a motorway, or under the flight path and then complaining about the noise?

I have respect for all types of boaters, but have had two experiences recently that hardens my resolve about such matters.

Firstly I'm in a largish powerboat coming through Hurst 'bout noon @ 25knts... leaving plenty of room for other boats... 30+ foot fishing boat approaches from my port side at full tilt.. and as I'm stand-on, I continue my course.. he crossed my bow less that 3 cables ahead and promptly throttles off to a standstill right in my path! I have to take immediate action to avoid a collision!

The other was in my rib when I came past a raggie struggling to pick up a dropped fender.... I approached asked if he needed assistance and he said yes.. I picked up fender for him as he contoiunue to sail away, caught him up, handed him fenedr and without so much as a smile or acknowledgement, took the fender and sailed on!

So the solent is full of ignorant, arrogant, buffoons!

I'll raise your 2 to 3 plonkers /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thats splitting hairs. I meant shipping including all sorts of boating activity of which there's plenty in and around Hurst but yes probably fishing boats dont anchor exactly off Hurst but near

Derf - I do understand 100% what you say about the Solent. It really winds me up when I suffer from obviously deliberate arsy behaviour & it's very tempting after a few of these to think "why should I be Mr Nice Guy".

BUT - You said 2 boats were bloody minded & then went on to say "the Solent is full of ignorant, arrogant buffoons!" It doesn't follow. The rest may be so nice it hurts! I think this is what happens to me as well - a couple of t*ssers & I really have to remind myself that the next boat approaching from port may well be helmed by a country curate.

Welcome to the life that a solent sailor has to live with every weekend when the sun is out.

It's a problem what will never be resolved as long as the two sides (sail and Power) are so differnent in their vues.

I work on the water almost all year and i see the most hoffic things almost every weekend.

I bet i could go into almost any marina and tell by a skippers actions what they will do. Will they tack slowly in a narrow channel causeing motorboats to scatter and crash or will they drive at high speed past a yacht causing mayhem behind.

it's just the same with drivers...i bet most of you could spot a bad driver before he got into his car.

Oh and for all out there i do have many hours on power and years on sail so i do know a bit about what i am talking about.

How can we solve this....Discuss @@@!!!

relatively simple head somewhere else!

I have sympathy with all aspects highlighted here so far - despite their apparant opposites.

there is no excuse for boats thundering by 20m away - except when others have made it difficult to avoid without major (and I mean major) diversions.

It's not exclusive to planning mobo's either - anchor Poole Patch on a clam weekend and a steady stream of yachts will motor within 10m of you one after the other 'cos you are on a straight line Poole / Hurst and they have plotted that course!

Personally I considerd tis this weekend when given a weekend fishing pass - left Poole Harbour 1730h Friday, picked up mackerel off Durlston and decided to head over to the banks off Alderney rather than bob around the coast between Weymouth and Poole all weekend getting bobbed around. Admittedly we are nearly 25ft and were out for more than a few hours!

Once 3 miles off, and including the whole time over there, we hardly saw anyone. The 2 40-50ft boats running up to the West of the Casquets were inconsiderate enough to come within sight, and their wake did eventually spill the water in the livebait tank.. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif... but there wasn't a lot they could have done about it - it's not my sea.

The muppets I saw in Poole Harbour Sunday on return were another thing entirely and it's not any surprise that 'gin palaces/large mobos' get a bad name. A V42 'Last Time(?) and similar sized 'Monkey Business' were quiet frankly dangerous in the wake they were creating and proximity to other craft in a crowded area.

If you want to fish areas like Poole Harbour entrance, Swash, Hurst narrows etc then you are going to be in for a ruff time after 0800h. To my mind no quality of fishing makes that worth it.

Simple just display a bit of tolerance and respect for others

Duncan, I agree with your analysis and I have to say that when I put up the original posting I anticipated the responses. I put the post up in the hope that we could get beyond the ya-ya dabate about whose bit of water it is.

If we could work towards a common understanding of others needs and a wee bit of courtesy then we'd be making some progress.

As I said in the original post the wash is but a minor irritant for my craft and as I can be on the mark witihn 10 mins of leaving my mooring I'll continue to fish the spot and wave at the nice guys and grimace at the not-so-nice. The boat's name is Hilda Maud, a dark blue hulled Orkadian 23, if you pass by on less than full chat give me a wave.

Re: Simple just display a bit of tolerance and respect for others

Chris - I'm not going to pass you - I will join you on your mark!!
