I shall be doing some diagnosis either Friday afternoon or saturday, not entirely convinced that my outdrive problem is the seals now, it feels like a bushed prop. So I shall be going down the end to see if I can make it slip then swap the props round and try again. Fun and games.

Best keep the G&T's in the middle of the table :-)

The prop blades sit on a rubber bush with the actual hub with the splines in the centre (on an aftermarket prop the middle hub is ally too). A bushed prop is where the blades can move on the hub, the VP ones are designed like this so they can move if yoou hit something. If yoou load them up the shaft spins but the prop doesn't. bit like a slipping clutch in a car.

Don't think I've explained that very well. Upshot is new props.

Glad I checked before having the crane out - it's not a bushed prop, it's a missing prop! As in physically not there, departed, vanished, gone!

The most amazing thing is we were still able to get 24 knots with only 3 props!

Oh dear that is not good. Shopping time you then.

Another benefit of twins...... They are the future.

I know exactly where it is, right under the 5knot speed limit bouts off mermaid quay! Out of my 8 old props I've managed to put together one half decent pair, advance had a spare cone nut, so I'm back up and running now. Hopefully sea trial this weekendcand if all goes well cancel my lift out. Good result really, cheaper than a gearbox

Yes a lot cheaper. Glad you are up and running again.

Amazed that you could not see this when you raised the outdrive? Am able to change my props when fully trimmed up, but this is an Alfa outdrive not VP.

Didn't raise the outdrive at the time, the BC gets pretty murky with 0 visibility when the tide is running. When I went down on the friday, the tide was out so the water in the marina had cleared, you could see the shaft then without even raising the leg. I can and did change the props to an old set on the berth no problems. I was sure it was the drive seals after having gone over the fishing line so the brain lead me down that track.

All fixed now, had a run over to Cardiff on Sunday and was well. Little bit of vibration from the old props - a chunk out of one of the blades but I can live with that for now

Hi white mischief. Take it that was your ss near the marina office? Was looking at the moorings earlier today. Nice facilities apart from the kids throwing stones in the car park! Hoping to move my tub down there in the next couple of weeks if I can get crew and then weather is kind. Any of you guys feel like helping out an inexperienced skipper? I had a complete spare set of vp duo props until about 3 weeks ago. Missus dumped them, not that it would have been of any use to you if they aren't AQ legs! Take care and glad all is now well. Dave

Hi Dave

Yep thats my Sunseeker by the ramp. Hopefully just out of range of the stones. Keep us informed when you are planning to come down, I may be able to help out, but if not there will lots of advice on here and there is quite a detailed section in the Peter Cumberledge Bristol Channel Cruising guide.

Cheers

Russell

Hi,

I might be able to crew for you depending on when you are making the trip, my motor sailor is just across from white mischief.

Surprised about the kids throwing stones, there are usually kids around at the steps generally fishing for crabs, but I've not seen any real misbehaviour.

Regards Mark

Gents. Thanks for the offer of help. I'd like to do it this weekend if possible but don't know what the weathers doing.I know this incredibly cheeky but could one of you have a quick look to see what time I would need to book sharpness etc? Unfortunately I am off to Norway tomorrow and back late on Thursday night. I could pick you both up from Bristol if weather ok. I don't have any flares But everything else is ok for the trip (need to allow a couple of hours to get the boat to sharpness). I'll try and get on line tomorrow, I'll get the hang of all this just nervous of the trip from sharpness to portishead as I have only ever done it once and was in company (although was lead vessel!).
All the best
Dave

Yes we are H

A nice socialable pontoon, with a few mobos on it.

I only know one person on G, but they seem like a nice bunch.

I cant help this weekend, sorry.

Having said that weather is forcast to be carp. Sunday is 15 kt winds gusting up to 30 kt :-(

This is all getting really confusing LOL. White Mischief - I'm still in the throws of trying to arrange it all. Tides are not the best on Sat/Sun as I need to get my boat down to sharpness early either of the days to catch the morning tide.
Three options so far:
1. Go to Lydney (I have crew for this but happy if anyone wants to join me) on Saturday and meet up with blue pearl and follow them down on Sunday. This is dependent on being able to get the boat to Sharpness.
2. Head straight down on Saturday but same dependency as option 1
3. Head across on Sunday either via Lydney and follow Blue Pearl or head straight down.
Oh WM - if it pans out Sunday and I pick you up the other question is fine.

I've spoken with the marina and they are happy for me to bring my 415 down although I'll have to clean her, soot from the other boats around my mooring (those long thin steel boats that can get under low bridges).

Just as well I don't do planning and make decisions for a living - doh - I do! ;-)
