WARNING WARNING. ICI Epoxy Primer Supplied by Coppercoat

There is (or was) definitely a problem with the (I believe) 3M product recommended by Coppercoat. My boat was being professionally treated by a recommended yard earlier this year. After blasting to strip back the hull was faired and epoxy coated using the 3m Epoxy they the copper was applied. The Coppercoat was finished and being tidied up when a large section peeled off. It wasn't the Coppercoat but the underlying grey epoxy layer that had not adhered. The yard had followed the correct temperatures, overcoating times etc. The manufacturers agreed the problem was with the product and it was re done.

Apparently there is a known issue with adherence of the grey layer to the black layer.

All sorted out now but a bit traumatic at the time!!

Begs the question whythen have they not made an announcement or done a product recall? especially as according to one
post they have such a wonderful Quality Control system ?

For approximately 20 years we, Aquarius Marine Coatings Ltd, have been using and supplying Scotchkote GP120 epoxy as now manufactured by 3M. Over this time period this protective epoxy primer has been used extensively and successfully on thousands of boats around the World.
A short while ago, a highly unusual problem occurred, whereby a layer of silver GP120 delaminated from a layer of black GP120. It is possible that the cause of this lack of adhesion was the presence of an undetected (and therefore not removed) surface layer of amine blush. My understanding is that the boat concerned is that owned by jimali of the post above. As he points out, the problem was noted and dealt with promptly and professionally by the yard in question and the boat is now safely back in the water.
However, so unusual was this occurrence that we reported it to the epoxy manufacturer, 3M. Naturally they are taking the matter very seriously and are conducting a series of tests on their retained samples from this batch of epoxy.
Although it is likely that there is no fault with this batch of epoxy, we as a retailer decided to err on the side of caution and, temporarily at least, withdrew the stock from sale. Not until the batch tests by 3M are concluded will we know whether there actually is a fault with this individual batch, or whether the problem faced on the above mentioned boat was simply due to an unfortunate set of circumstances/operations during application.
The OP mentions a boat in Portugal. The owner of this particular yacht has one tin of GP120 epoxy from the batch currently undergoing testing. As a precaution, earlier this week we advised him to set it aside and allow us to provide fresh replacement epoxy, free of charge.
In the meantime he decided to apply a coat of International Gelshield 200 to various parts of the hull. My assumption is that it is this product that is unfortunately long past its use-by date. I hasten to add this was not supplied by us!
