** WARNING ** Pirates - Red Sea

Nearly right. Wind Assisted F***ing Idiot. Collective designation of yachties by our merchant navy friends. Distinguishes us from PAFI's.

Well, fancy that!
Thank you, you've put me out of my misery!

Not fair really, as I do TRY to keep out of their way. Fairly easy up here, the only MN boat I regularly come across is the Ullapool/Stornaway Ferry!
Mind you, when we have the NATO excercises it's more of a problem - Nuclear Subs, Bulwark and Ocean. Myriad Tornados and Typhoons. YES, THAT low!!
Well, not quite.

Happy sailing,
R

Thanks for the warning

however, it was very general.

In this quoted post not only do you come across as pompous but also as an FI yourself.

If there was any further information, I would have included it in my original post.

When I get further information, I post UPDATES. Currently, there is no further news, as and when I get it, I can assure you I will post it here.

Now I am not sure how long you have been interested in sailing down the Red Sea and I am not aware of how far south you intend to travel but you need to be aware of a few salient points.

Firstly, the lower part of the Red Sea is a very risky area for leisure/cruising sailors especially if they value their freedom.

Secondly, you probably will not get any boat insurance cover south of a point located at 35°E. This is where my insurance STOPS!

If you proceed further south, you need to be aware of the ISAF Registering Point located on a line drawn between Jeddah and Masa Wasi. If you are not aware of this then you really should not be sailing in this region.

As Bebe, has pointed out earlier IT IS DANGEROUS to sail in the Red Sea and becomes more dangerous the further south you proceed. Yemen is becoming like Somalia so you will get no respite which every side of the Red Sea you decide to sail. Once you are down near the Bab-el-Mandeb (Gates of Tears) you are in hostile territory and are on your own. At best you will just get robbed, money, food, watches, radios, sextant, chart-plotter, boat even! At worst you will be a hostage or dead.

Do not rely on the EUFOR to bale you out. Their mission is to protect the humanitarian aid to the starving in eastern Africa. They do not want to have to rescue stupid yachtsmen and women who think thy know better!

You are not called WAFI's for fun!

RIGHT, was that enough information for you?

RED SEA.

CURRENT FAVORABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS AND RECENT SUSPICIOUS
ACTIVITY INDICATES THE POSSIBLE PRESENCE OF PIRATES IN THE RED SEA.

Three hours later it was cancelled!!!!

We were booked on The Red Sea Rally but have cancelled because of worries about Egyptian politics not pirates. We have sailed with Lo the organiser and may go next year.

Any more sensible comments about the safety of the rally - backed up with facts - would be appreciated as we have several friends going.

Come on, people, give lensemoan a break; if there wasn't potential for drama somewhere in the world, he'd have nothing to post about.

I agree...give the AW a break...I saluted him is an earlier post.

If we ever meet, he will have to salute me. I just received my Admiral commission in the Texas Navy from Governor Rick Perry...no kidding!

Great entertainment but I must also ask why would anybody risk piracy?

Not for the joys of sailing in the Middle East, that’s for sure!

And, yes, I have spent time there but not as a volunteer.

As to sources - all historic, & as we are frequently advised, past success is no guarantee of future performance so if you want to take the risk, it’s your choice but hopefully not your funeral.

Me – I wouldn’t go 1,000 miles near a pirate zone – but I’m a whimp but hopefully not a WAFI.

Following on from my original post on the 16th, this report, posted on the 18th refers to two attempted hijackings in the Red Sea which happened on the 17th August, North of Bab al-Mandeb Strait:

Iran's Navy has thwarted attempts by pirates to seize two Iranian merchant vessels near Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia.

Iran's Navy Deputy Commander Rear Admiral Mahmoud Mousavi said Saturday that the two vessels were attacked by 30-50 pirate speedboats respectively at 15 and 26 miles northwest of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The pirates fled after Iran's Navy took swift action and opened heavy fire on them, he added.

Mousavi added that the vessels were carrying millions of dollars worth of goods.

In line with international efforts against piracy, the Iranian Navy has been conducting patrols in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden since November 2008 in order to safeguard merchant containers and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran or other countries.

The Gulf of Aden, which links the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

Despite international patrols, Somali pirates have hijacked dozens of ships in recent years and have taken in tens of millions of dollars in ransom.

Iran's Navy has managed to foil several attacks on both Iranian and foreign tankers during its mission in the international waters.

And that's a recomendation.

For years Lensman has posted information, either newsworthy or of security value, on this forum.

I, for one, am very grateful and do not need to know his sources.

This forum would be the poorer, if he was driven away by the nitpickers and criticisms.

+1.

BUT his reply to the request for more info and as to whether the rally was going into a dangerous area was IMHO rude, condescending, unhelpful and uncalled for.

If he had checked the info provided and that provided by his "source(s)" he would have realised that

a. I'm not doing the rally!
b. The rally is going no where near the area concerned.

However, his attitude has obviously upset a few people with thinner skin than mine.

I have tried the links given in this thread and cannot find anything about pirates in the Red Sea. The presstv link is an Iranian news site. It did show other news items but not anything about the Iranian navy stopping a pirate attack. I also did a general search using Google for "Iranian navy intercepts pirates in the Red Sea" and came up with nothing.

My point is that we live in a world with a total overload of information, and you can't just take any warning or possible news item posted on the web at face value until it has been confirmed by several sources.

What Lenseman has posted in the past has nothing to do with this thread, which I think is unsubstantiated scare mongering.

Cheers,
Per

But it had lots of *s, caps, bold and red letters in it. What more do you need to understand that something is serious, important and comes from a valid source?????
