Help please.

I have 2006 merc 4.2 250hp dtronic and a warning light was flashing today after about 10 minutes at 23 knots. It was an orange light with what looks like a black tick symbol. Anyone know what it means please?
Thanks

RTM and ITYWF that it is the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) (also known as a check engine warning lamp)

It indicates a problem with the engine if the lamp illuminates while the engine is operating. The lamp will be on when the key switch is in the "RUN" or 1 position and the engine is not operating. When the engine starts, the light should go off.

I have the same engine and I too am puzzled by the function of this light, the manual says it lights when there is a malfunction....errr great but not enough info. It is as VicS says the MIL and you should also have warning lights to the right of the MIL for Oil pressure and Exhaust Temp. What I am unsure about is why the MIL should flash ( not even sure if it should flash or just give a steady light) on its own and not one the other warning lights OP and Temp (which should also give an audible alarm). Please post back if you get an answer to this one. Sorry I cant be much help. I have an electronic manual for the engine if you need one.

Hi Kittycarter,as VicS says it is the MIL - I have the same engine and I too am puzzled about the function of this light , I have checked the manual and it says it lights if there is a malfunction...great but not enough info. To the right of the MIL there are also warning lights for Oil pressure and water temp which should also give an audible alarm if there is a malfunction so why MIL too?? Not sure if it should flash either as the manual just says it will light. Sorry I cant be much help but I have an E manual if you need one. Please post back if you get an answer outside the forum but hopefully someone will be along with knowledge of this engine. Regards and good luck.Mike

Well, had some luck.
A great guy from Signature Marine plugged in the Rinda tool and found the fault code causing the light to flash.

Then spoke to Mercruiser USA and they were amazing. Found the fault code and emailed me the full fault code list and diagnostic manual for the fuel system which will enable me to get the issue sorted with the minimum of cost and removing the guess work. It is a fault in the instrumented injector. This is a small sensor between injector 1 and the ECU which controls the timing of all 6 injectors. It is either a wire cmoe loose or faulty or the sensor itself, and thats it.
Big it up for Mercruiser USA and thier customer service line

Try another run & see if the light goes out sometimes once cancelled they never reoccur.worth a try before you buy a new injector.sometimes a little air in the system will put the light on.having said that no 1 injector is a common fault
It's worth buying the rinda tool as there not very expensive from rinda in the us
