Warning Idiots at large

Whether we are "into wildlife" or not we would do well to make sure we do not upset the tree huggers and ornifollowgists if we want to keep public opinion on our side.

You only need to attend a local meeting or two to quickly become aware of just how formidable some of the 'middle england' of the river can be ! :D

What about the poor fish........

With respect Richard, where you work the river is considerably wider than some of the more limited streches of the non tidal Thames. 12 knots is very nearly 3 times over the speed limit. 20 knots is 5 times over the limit! To those who think I am exaggerating I would suggest you look at prosecutions which are rare due to difficulties in proving. Documented cases I am aware of are a case of a sports cruiser ending up high and dry and another of a vessel overtaking a commercial user towing a water skier.

True Blue - I would not wish to publish details of insurance claims of which I am aware but might suggest that perhaps the Insurance companies if approached might make a general statement

With respect I grew up on the Thames cruised all of it many times even lived above the lifeboat station at tedd as well as working alongside it at wloo and bfriars for 13 years so I do have a slight understanding !

Ok I am going to say it .... I do think that sometimes we perceive wash to be far greater than it actually is. That's from someone e who also had a family boat in Chichester for ten years as well ...

Going back to the original post... Posting any picture on here means its in the public domain for ever and ever and personally I think you are very brave to do so ...

Right that's got Friday night off to a good one ...

Edit forgot my four years as a Thames Broker ..

As expected this thread has gone exactly where I thought it would, like all of the ones that post a picture and complain about the wash...to add I am not criticizing the OP for posting but I knew it would end this way..

What you have to remember is that not one single contributor to the Thames forum has ever broken the speed / acceptable wash limit, never ever, not even down those quiet stretches...never, would never happen...

One has  In fact I know of one or two others too. Flogging is too good for em.

Keel haul them using a length of good hemp and a seamaster 27.

No one else got in a bit of a predicament and had to use a healthy amount of throttle to extricate one from the merde or done something you know you shoudn't?

Oh that'll just be me then.

Oh dear,
Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa
Flagelate, flagelate.

Mark the wash from my puny prop wouldn't cause othes much inconvenience.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone :D

And I only have small boat that makes less wash at 30 knots than it does at 6.

However I do not make a habit of speeding. The OP remonstrated with the other skipper and did not get a good response. I understand that would get up his nose and he was rightly miffed.
Others were not involved and were not in a position to judge yet were ready to throw a length of rope over a low branch.......

Just pointing out that it would be a shame that the forum turned into a yank style one where everyone talks up a good job, yet no one actually does it.

I like to think I am a responsible river user and a fair skipper yet I have put myself in a position through impatience and a thoughtless overtaking attempt of a very slow boat towing a pontoon where it was either open the throttle and get the hell outta there fast or risk running out of water on the inside of a bend.

I think I must have got up to 25 ish knots by the time I got well in front and could drop off plane again without the huge wash dropping off knocking the towed pontoon all over the place.

Some on here would have reported me for it it appears, even though:

1. It was a genuine error that required extreme measures.
2. No one kicks me more than I myself when I get it wrong.
3. I waved an apology to the skipper who quite rightly was shouting, cussing and waving his arms about like an Italian.

There was a thought in some quarters that the thread should expand to raise the general issue of wash however caused, but that's virtually impossible without being seen to flame the original "miscreant".

Having been there, done something silly, the natural reaction is to look the other way, press on as if nothing had happened. One ? feels guilty; embarrassed; but a chap doesn't admit that does he? Loss of face etc.

Case history:
A long long time ago when the sun shone briefly for a few days. I misjudged the length of a lock and made folks move around to fit me in - which didn't work. One bloke had to move out backwards of which he was not confident and so was V.Cross. Wouldn't accept a beer as a sorry present. Ill feeling all round even after suitable grovels from me.

The next day we met said boat going the other way, and I made signs of contrition, which were acknowledged with much acceptance and bonhomie

Result: Better feelings all round. All resolved.

The moral of this turgid tale is say sorry if you've fouled things up. Other Party may accept, and all's well. Better than ignoring faux pas.
The difficulty is being aware of anything in the first place....

Why not?

You can use whatever boat you fancy.

It is a shame to see these boats not at sea (our marina is another extreme case of this with 45ft flybridge boats wedged onto a 4ft deep ditch :( ) but not as much a shame as seeing them left to fend for themselves. At least this one appears in good nick and is used.

Indeed you can but it just seems like using a ferrari to pop down the shops and back without giving it the chance to have a good blast in the surrounding that it deserves. imho :)

And I also agree that it is nice to see boats being used rather than rotting away unloved and wasted in a marina.
