Thats peanuts. They've just found a WW2 bomb in East Yorks in a delicate position, at the N Sea Gas terminal at Easington. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

There are lots of these damn things get washed up on the east coast. Just don't go anywhere near them. I go into lots of houses where people have picked up spent aircraft cannon shells walking the beaches. I haven't come across an idiot with a phosphorous flare yet...thankfully.

I don't understand how you can find a 'spent cannon shell'. Surely if it's a shell and it's spent, it has exploded and therefore ceased to be?

Cannon shell cases then.....many dating back to World War 2. Nice brass artifacts to clutter up the mantelpiece. The shell case does not explode, it is usually ejected from the aircraft once the shell is fired and is often found on the beaches that have been used as ranges here for well over 60 years.

Aaah, right then. Caught my attention as around here (N.Kent Coast) we do occasionally find the shells themselves, unexploded. Well, according to the nice man from Army Bomb Disposal who takes them away, some are inert, and others might not be, and it's hard to tell the difference after 65 years in salt water.
Our local CG Manager once spotted a shell from an anti-aircraft gun (yes, shell, not the case) in the window of an arty shop specialising in driftwood etc, right in the town centre....
And there was another local who had a still-live artillery shell beside his fireplace (which he used!) for years until one day he wondered if the thing might be dangerous and asked somebody!

I had a young friend in the army bomb disposal unit. He is now sadly quadraplegic from a game of rugby played on his way to Iraq. He told me that the majority of bombs found on building sites are reported to them on a friday afternoon.

Work that one out /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

i once found a big yellow canister with "danger do not touch" marked all over it,i was scuba diving at the time close to the Naval base in Scotland, told the navy diving team where to find it,they said it was a piece of unexploded ordinance, must have fell of a ship during excersises.

found a few practice torpedeos as a scuba diver too
