WARNING Cobra Marine MR F55 EU Radio

Thanks for the link BD :)
That one says it is only suitable for use over 20w for short 'interval'.
I assume the VHF switches from 1w to 25w automatically when you press the red button. I don't know how long the red button process is but do you think it would be OK or should I look for a more powerful (resistive) model ?

I did my radio exam many years ago and way before the advent of DSC. Could someone explain what happens when you press the red button ? Is it just a DSC transmission ?

Every DSC station in range of that unit (up to 40nm for DSC) get a very loud warning and a message thats says, DISTRESS, your MMSI, your position and then either the nature of the distress (if you sent it) or just undesignated, If you havent (usually just pressing and holding will do this)

For me, the best part about DSC is you can send you pal a private text asking him to switch channel, and if he agrees, it switches both your radios to the same channel. So you can chat away without disturbing anyone else first.

I know that this thread is quite old but I wonder if someone can help. I've a Cobra MR F55 EU VHF radio on a boat I've just bought. I've entered the position and time as per the manual but it doesn't seem to want to store this data. When I switch the set off and then on again it loses both the position and time. Is this supposed to happen? Do I need to enter the position and time every time I switch the VHF on? Many thanks

Your radio needs to be connected to a GPS source, outputting the position and time data on a continuous basis. The procedure for inputting a one off time and position is aimed at including that data in a DSC distress call where the GPS has failed: once you turn the set off the data is wiped from the radio and you have to start again.
The manual tells you how to do this at page 32. Link to the manual is here https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2203/2035/files/MRF55_manual-Eng.pdf?6163310166077199824

I suspect that you will. If I were to enter manually on mine (not a Cobra), it would insist on being updated every 4 hours even if I left it on. Helps to ensure a stale position isn’t transmitted with a DSC distress. I can’t see any other reason for entering a position.

Thanks for this. The GPS is right next to the VHF so I'll check if it's connected when I get down to the boat tomorrow.

No, you need to connect it to an a NMEA GPS source via the data cable. The manual entry is just a backup.
Also check it has an MMSI programmed.
