the panel warning buzzer on my yanmar has died. a replacement unit costs £149! so now i need to repair it. the bit that makes the noise is a couple of thin metal discs which used to be stuck together but have now gone their separate ways. i have seen a similar device in a cheap car stereo speaker. does anyone know if i can stick them together again and if so, with what?

Have you tried looking in the Radio Spares or Maplin catalogues. I found the starter button for a Yanmar control panel for a friends boat from Index Marine which saved him a fortune as Yanmar would only supply the whole panel!! Generally these are off the shelf components, not many engine manufacturers (none??) got to the trouble to manufacture electrical components.

Good luck.

visit maplin, a standard 12v buzzer should do nicely, OK it wont be marinised, but at the price you can buy several!

a couple of thin metal discs sounds like a piezo-electric sounder....some of these can't be driven directly from DC, so perhaps check that dc reaches your buzzer before buying one. If you find it's a non-dc one, happily, they're even cheaper! & maplin/rs components/cpc should be able to help.

Hi Snowpussy - as Andy says are you sure it's the buzzer itself that's failed? I'm in the middle of fault finding a problem with the Yanny on my Oceanis at the moment. The buzzer works but only on shutting down the engine after use. It doesn't give me the usual confidence check before start up any more...... sob

Snolepard,

Hi what yu have is probably a stack of piezo wafers. These are metal coated ceramic discs. When a voltage is aplied these expand, reversing the votage they contract as well I think.

Usually, they are not guled together, but stuck in a small black box and under slight spring pressure. Aplying an AC signal will make them buzz. These buzzers are basically Voltage devices using almost no current.

I think it would be logical, that gluing them will isolate them and they stop working.

As far as I know, some Audi's, they 500SE definately had such buzzers.

hope it helps

Just in case it helps - I've connected my overheat alarm sender on my YSE12 to a light, and a bell. Just a 12v one I've had lying around in a junk box for years.

I read on here of someone who got a simple max/min thermometer and stuck the probe to the exhaust elbow.

I have done the same, and if I suspect water blockage, or hear a different exhaust note, a quick glance will show if water is still flowing. The top of the elbow is usually cool, as the water enters. Stop the water and watch the temperature gauge shoot up.
