My mate Skippy bought one in desperation.
Desperation turned to Exasperation when studying the performance statistics.

It appeared on ebay and returned only 15% of the original outlay.

You're quite near the Hawk Conservancy, aren't you? I'd just sneak in one day, when they're not looking, and borrow one of their Eagle Owls.

Alternatively, I understand that seagulls aren't very keen on dead sheep. Do you have a piece of headgear that could masquerade as such? You could suspend it from your crosstrees.

Hope this helps.

I used to use one of these commercial savonius rotor devices when the mast was up. Very effective, when it was sent up on the burgee halyard at the end of a trip.

At about £9 from your local farm supplier, it's good value

Re: Wailing gull scarer

Berthon at Lymington have a PA system which blasts out the sound of a gull in distress at regular intervals. It sounds awful, but it seemed very effective.

Hearing it conjured up a mental picture of a gull being tortured with fiendish instruments by a wild-eyed, mad mobo owner with a tape recorder.

They gave up with the one in Campers - the starlings used it as a call to prayer! It also p'd off every boat owner for miles around.

The authors of Leviticus and Deuteronomy seem not to like them.

[ QUOTE ]
These, moreover, you shall detest among the birds; they are abhorrent, not to be eaten: the eagle and the vulture and the buzzard, and the kite and the falcon in its kind, (Leviticus 11:13-14)

every raven in its kind, (Leviticus 11:15)

and the ostrich and the owl and the sea gull and the hawk in its kind, (Leviticus 11:16)

A big rubber snake left on the fore deck might give you a result. I'm told they work very effectively...

Am open to correction, but I think it was Colin of Englander fame that hung a dead seagull on his boat and that was the end of his problem with seagulls, but the beginning of his problems with seagull-huggers.
