Want to be a lifeboat man?

Sunday I left my radio on channel zero (only receives) and left a voice activated recorder next to it.

The lifeboat must have been called out about 4 times from morning 'till 10pm

I lost count.

Jet ski.
yacht aground
speed boat broken down.

What sort of Sunday did the RNLI crews get?

Do they rotate crews on a busy day like that?

Dedication eh? Special type of people methinks.

And somebody grumblede about me using the phrase "Birmingham navy"!

Jet ski should not get into trouble as it should not be far from shore & should have spare fuel plus a companion boat. But they do don't they?

Yacht aground, Ok we all do that from time to time, but why call out lifeboat? I only take the risk of grounding where the consequences are minimal - & I have a twin keeler! There is little excuse for risking grounding on a lee shore. Even with engine and/or rig failure one should be able to anchor in time.

Speedboat broken down? No auxilliary O/B engine or oars?

I can't help feeling that many of RNLI call outs are to people who could do a lot more to help themselves.

we got involved with a jetski in trouble a few weeks ago, the boat rescuing it was doing ok with it tied along side, then they started towing it, and resulted in it going over, and the jetskiers having to be rescued again. Then the jetski started to sink, was amazed they can become water logged. The RNLI arrived, and all was well, or looked like it as we left.

I believe some of the older ones with crystals and things have it.

I can't help feeling that many of RNLI call outs are to people who could do a lot more to help themselves.

...and sometimes they help people who specifically say they don't want help.

I know two RNLI lifeboatmen and a 'non-RNLI' lifeboatman. They love it. Their idea of a bad weekend is one where they don't go out.
