Just fill up with fuel at the heating duty rate.
Suppliers have no responsiblity for the abuse of the 60/40 derogation.
It all down to the skipper and the RYA have confirmed this.
A chum paid £1.20 an litre at a well known marina recently, if he knew where to go he could have paid about 60 p.
Funny old world Innit. ?
 
Although not to be a spoil sport - if Customs audited the said marina they have recorded what boats took the tax free diesel and the 60/40 which is the boat owners responsibility not the marina's on choice of taxation.
so if you decided to fill up mid summer with your boat's tanks to the brim from empty say for example 400 litres and you take it at the tax free heating rate - That would raise suspicions as opposed to filling your boat up say in October.

its a bit like the virus financial supports that have been defrauded to the tune of £40bn accorsing to parliament. If HMG sets up tax on an honesty system basis, there will be lots of people who take advantage.

I'm a bit out of the loop, we used buy fuel by the cubic meter as we had a 10,000 mile range.
 
This was always clear when the rules changed on red and I remember it being discussed on here.

The onus was always on the boat owner to justify the amount of fuel that they used for non-propulsion purposes and HMRC stated that they would accept that a 60/40 split did not require any proof and they would not investigate. Any greater proportion than 40% used for non-propulsion may have to be supported by evidence should the tax man come knocking.

At the time I think that many of us thought that was a good deal when faced with the complete loss of the derogation. Perhaps something we might lose if people start abusing it? Just a thought.
 
A question of those prepared to take advantage of the discretionary action from HMG to allow boaters (and no other section of the community ) to pay a reduced rate of tax on fuel.
It could of course put at risk the derogation and as result in the total withdrawal of the scheme ?
Then all us pay the penalty.

If only other tax rates were voluntary. :)
 
Perhaps consider the evidence if investigated. For example, a string of fuel purchases amounting to, say, several hundred litres at 100% domestic rate over a couple of weeks summer cruise in a motorboat might be difficult to explain as 100% domestic use , if challenged.

In practice not a real issue or even a temptation for me since some retailers only sell diesel at one rate - 60/40 - take it or leave it.
 
so it is ok to be a cheat so long as you don’t get caught is it

There does seem to be a bit of a running theme on here to that effect across a number of threads and a range of laws, of course if it was youths on the street suggesting the same sort of things it wouldn't be rewarded as favourably.
