Explosions possibly from Shoeburyness.Thanks for the link swatchways that is interesting. I understood it was an explosives factory, maybe it was during the war. I guess what they make is explosive but they might not want to publicise making armaments (if they do at all).
If you look on google map you will see there are some small boats moored up that creek. I do intend to walk along the paths that go down to the creeks from the road in Great Oakley someday.

Might be a dense question - something I should know - but why would there be explosions from shoeburyness, I wasn't aware of anything significant there?
