Hi I am new to this forum and to wooden sailboats. I have just acquired a 1957 King Arthur 35. I am having trouble finding any information or photos of any online. Would anyone know where I might be able to find info on this boat.

The basic details and a profile drawing are in www.sailboatdata.com Google Walter Rayner (note correct spelling) and you will get more information on the man. Almost certainly the boat would be a one off commission so you are unlikely to find much detail.

This is an unusual design for him as most of his designs that were built in any numbers were more motor sailer orientated like the Atlantic and Barbary ketches. Your boat is of an older style and traditionally built. Many of his boats were built by FC Mitchell in Poole, but in those days many other yards were still building one offs to individual designs. Hopefully there will be a builders plate somewhere. Worth looking at the old Lloyds lists in the 50's if you have the original name.

Hi Tranona......
I did find the line drawing and the very little details on www.sailboatdata.com. I reached out to sailboat data.com to try to get a high resolution line drawing, but they only responded with "good luck with it" and Do I know who built it? I am told it was built in 1957 in Burma. And made of Burmese teak. I would like to post a photo or two here, but I have not figured out how to do that yet.

Hi akirk....

Thank you foe the info. Very much appreciated. And yes I now own Hintha. Would like to post photos of her here, not sure how. Thanks again

not sure about photos - either go to the advanced reply and manage attachments or host them elsewhere and then embed them here...
there doesn't seem to be much about Hintha online, though a google search does give one result:

1954 Custom-Craft Wooden (All Teak), Rare Opportunity! Beautiful 35' Wooden all teak Sailboat... This boat has a wonderful history. It has been maintained by an artist and craftsman for years. It was my father's pride and joy but he recently passed. I live in California can not give it the love and attention it deserves... So it is time to pass it on to others who can truly enjoy it for all its splendor. It was pulled out of the water last week... the hull and boathouse were freshly varnished. I assume from the description (though dates seem slightly off) that it is the same yacht - I presume there are not many 35' yachts made in Burma called Hintha - though as the name is a Burmese name for a swan type bird, perhaps there are many in which case this might not be yours!

I suspect that if you go through that website and contact the owner they may have lots of info from their father...

Interesting that they say 1954 but you feel it is 1957 but the Yachting Monthly article listed above was also 1954 - if there was only one built then wouldn't that mean it has to be 1954?

lovely boat :)

Hi akirk....

I met and knew the father many years ago. My friend's father passed away a couple of years ago. My friend said it was a 1954, but the survey says 1957. I am still trying to find what I can on the boat as far as any literature. My friend that i acquired the boat from say he has the plans for it. I was hoping to find other King Arthur 35's online. I am in the process of changing out the motor mounts and cleaning up some of the wiring. I still need reach out to Yachting Monthly to see if I can get a copy of the article printed in 1954. The ad posting that my friend had posted states 10'6" beam, but sailboat data.com states 9'4". I have some measuring to do.

Thank you again for your help

Think you will find that the boat is a one off. It was quite common in those days before mass production to have a boat designed specifically for you. Building such boats in Burma, India and Hong Kong was common, often by ex pats or colonial civil servants taking advantage of local labour and low cost timber. Even for the time, that design would have been considered old fashioned - long and narrow with short waterline length - at a time when design was seeking to improve performance for offshore racing. However, many conservative sailors with pre war experience considered the older designs as superior, just as now where some see the early GRP boats based on wooden boat designs as the ultimate in cruising boats.

It would be interesting to know how it ended up in your part of the world as I expect it would have been built for a British or Australian owner (Rayner was Australian, but lived in Poole) and the boat is clearly designed in the UK tradition. Looks lovely and hope you are able to keep it going.
