Hiya folks..
we ripped out the old foam backed vinyl headlining from our 79 seastream 34 ketch... looking at what to replace it with...
the substrate is fairly smooth.. and we want the ability to paint the darn thing in the future.
Having lived aboard for 4 years, and seen all sorts.. we are thinking of putting up vinyl wall paper.. seriously.. the heavy blown vinyl that can be painted...

WHY NOT ? .. is the question, cant think of anything negative here after weighing up the options...

One coat of VERY heavy duty lining paper with waterproof adhesive, then the blown vinyll, then emulsion (vinyl silk)...

awaiting disenting or otherwise comments lol..

I have just started replacing the same material in our main cabin.
I am using a material called Whiterock.
This is normally used as wall lining to commercial Kitchens and laboratories.
Is is a 2.5mm thick plastic.
It is easy to cut to shape and will follow the curved of the deckhead.
It can be glued or screwed into place if you have a way of doing that.
It is easy to keep clean and will not rot or fall apart.

It is not cheap but if you talk to an installer you can usually pick up a couple of sheets at a reasonable price

No reason at all. I've never used vinyl wallpaper in a boat, but I have in a camper van. In that case I covered plywood sheets with it and screwed them on for headlining. In a metal van condensation can be a major problem but we never had any problems with the headlining in about 5 years of ownership.

We used vinyl wallpaper on the interior bulkheads of Iris Mary , which were of thin plywood sandwich construction, with foam between the battens. It is getting a bit scruffy now, 23 years on, but it looked fine for years and years. It still is good enough to keep it off of the ´to-do´list.
We think we used strong paste, but was wallpaper paste, nothing fancy. We didn´t try it on fibreglass, though.
