Wallingford Moorings

You may be interested to know that the new moorings at Wallingford are not EA 24 hour moorings but a South Oxfordshire District Council (who funded and carried out the work) project which the EA supported.

I asked the EA what depth of water was available and they tell me that the bankside was dredged to a depth of more than 1 metre throughout the length, and all the dredged material was used to backfill up to the new landing level.

Also a water-point, pump-out station and electric hook-ups points throughout feature in the moorings design, have planning consent and the ducting is in place. However, they have not been done yet because the funding ran out.

The moorings there are ok you'd get in no problem Tony, there was some massive stuff moored there on Sunday when we stopped.

There are no facitilies there yet and not sure it needs them, its not a good spot for a pump out, imagine putting a pump out in the middle of the Henley parkside moorings. Also with the reserved space for Salters and a pump out space there will not be much left.

Annoying is a drain outlet which sloshes againest a boat moored there like a permanent bow thruster and the grey shale they have put down which gets kicked all over the boats, erm... otherwise ok

Was up there a few weeks ago just after the Oxford Ditch do at Byrons so I have seen them, although we managed to get a spot town side.

I understand they are mindful that installing a full services facility would reduce the space available for visitors mooring and as the funding has dried up it obviously won't happen soon. I was thinking it should be possible to put a water tap in for containers without too much trouble though.

The stones dressing the sidewalk is something I specifically complained about as I think its just inviting low life to throw stones - a sensitive subject with me. Its even worse town side where they have recently dug and reinstated and then covered with largish granite chips ... ugh !

Didn't know about the drain outlet but guess there's not much they can do about that.

Coming back in late July the new moorings were completely full bar space for a small one at the top. Everybody had respected the "don't moor on the Salters Steamers" signs so the top 1/4 of the moorings was empty. However, in the full part of the public moorings, was a ......Salters steamer! No crew on board. Wondered if they were making some kind of point.

Well, if they were on OUR moorings I don't see any problem stopping on "theirs".
At least until they moved on.

I'm at the rally at Beale Park and as it happens, I had words with a Gentleman complete with a fabulous ditto launch who said he was very involved in getting the moorings done.

He asked my opinion on whether a pumpout would be sensible, given that it block off 20m of mooring space - towards the Salter's end.

My view was there aren't enough pumpouts on the river and given the recent breakdowns etc more would be a good idea. The infrastructure is there, just the machinery isn't.

He was fairly adamant that Salters used the end moorings - but I haven't seen it occupied all season. ? any comments.

While on the subject of Salters:- "Marlow" may not be repairable (to passenger standards anyway) and maybe sold or scrapped.

Stopped off for the night last Sat. Although the "old" moorings are administered by the council the "new" ones are administered by the caravan site adjoining. We were advised by the Young lad who collected the fee that we were welcome to use the Shower/toilet block and he gave us the keycode to get in. Ther is a tap as well but you would need a longish hose to use it

The toilet block is recently built to a good standard but not being cleaned too regularly and out of loo paper. Still, better than most
