I found the VOX option on mine irritating there is a slight delay when you transmit which sort of requires you to say the first word twice to be sure it gets through.
What I did find useful is using the headset but not in VOX mode, leave the radio on your belt and press the TX button to talk.
Not quite as handsfree as VOX but easier than unclipping it to use normally, especially as the belt clip on the motorola grips like an alligator and takes some removing.

If i remember the group test article the quoted range was 2K in clear air.

Well they have arrived and we've played with them and so far they seem pretty good. Solid construction, positive channel / volume select and a nice funky blue colour. Short range (i..e 50 / 100 metres) they seem fine - probably worth the money I'd say.
