Hi,

I came across the open air separator system by Walker Engineering online and I was wondering if there's any experience with these here?

Snake Oil or worth considering to change the factory air separators of my Volvo Penta TAMD61A with these?

Thanks

I had a Walker Airsep crankcase breather on my Cummins and never had any problems. Certainly a worhtwhile piece of kit. Friend had one to stop his air filters clogging with oil on his knackered Volvo.

If your air filters are effectively dry but dirty next time you change them, the engines aren't burning a significant amount of oil over a season and your crankcase breather filter isn't dripping with oil (assuming it has been changed every few years), I wouldn't bother. It's definitely not snake oil, but on a 30ish year old engine not a lot of point. Your engine won't run any better or use less fuel. The engine bay by now is probably a bit greasy anyway.

Also check out the Mann Hummel provent I run them on both my Landrovers and will be running them on the 6btas in due course, when I work out how to get a 48 hour day...

Hi again,

Parked this due to Corona but keen now to look into alternative air filters, since my standard Volvo "pads" currently installed need replacement soon and 4 of them would cost a good 120-160€...

My neighbour here in the harbour has the Mann+Hummel filters (4308067102) installed with the same engines as me (VP TAMD61A) and I just realized you had mentioned them here as well.

Anything specific to consider when changing them? Pros and cons? Simple as taking old ones off, putting new ones on or anything specific to bare in mind? Could get them ordered currently at around 120€ each, which seems like a decent price.

Thanks

I fitted K&N on my 61’s

Defo felt more peppy. £70 odd each from memory. Can’t remember the model number I bought but measured the turbo inlet flange and went from there

Looks nice!

Yeah, currently confirming available sizes as I changed my turbos a few years back (my orig. ones were rubbish after nearly 30 years) and the turbo inlet flange of the new turbos is bigger. Do I rightfully assume, that adaptors between turbo inlet flange and airfilter are not ideal and that the airfilter should fit on the turbos directly to make sure airflow is not negatively impacted?

Thks

I just removed the entire black box and fitted straight onto the turbo. Made sure surfaces where clean and grease free….never fell off ?

Sounds like a plan. Would you have the diameter of your turbo inlet flange to hand by any chance? Looks like the same as mine. Are these the orig. turbos or did you replace them as well? Had to fit new ones 2 years ago, as my old ones were in a very bad condition after nearly 30 years and the turbines would get stuck all the time.

Also, would you have the exact K&N models and part numbers available? I assume these are washable, right?

Many thanks

Thanks. Judging from the photo you uploaded, we both have the same turbo flange diameters, which is approx. 110mm. The OE turbos I had before were 70mm, so I don't the the Mann+Hummel filters are a good fit for me after all.

Thks

Older engines fine ,but a word of caution about theses oil and mesh filters to replace the dry paper OEMs on the newer engines .

On car forums with modern sensors like the Mass Air Flow upstream after the cartridge but before the turbo or inlet apparatus, excess oil can trigger a CEL , check engine light .

Potentially with your brand new ish common rail - CR high speed diesels if there is a critical sensor before the air finally flows past the inlet valves into the cylinders then these could be adversely affected by the oil mist inadvertently created .

Warning lights , alarms , limp mode , take your pick then the rest as the electrotwackery tries to make sense .

portofino is right, in the car world, a lot of modern engine dont like k&n (or any other filter that works like a k&N, using oil as part of the filter material) filters.

I would imagine its the same in the boat world, but have no experience in that space.

On car engines those style of K&N can also be a lot noisier than the airbox that is typically removed. Not sure whether that is the case on a turbo diesel marine engine, but something to be potentially aware of.

Thanks for the input. I assume my 1990 VP TAMD 61A arguably count as 'older engines'...? :)

Also, do all K&Ns use oil to filter? There are dry and non-dry open airfilters, no?

Thks

Hi again,

I think I have the diameter of my turbo inlet flange confirmed by now: 108mm. Best fit according the the K&N website would be the RC-1645 model. Would you know if that is the model you have? Looks like it from the pics.

Thks

Yes…that’s the one ? Stainless end plate for sure

No MAF to worry about on those engines. I’ve run them on modern stuff without issue. 5 min job
to clean a maf anyway.

You need the oil to trap the particles. They come pre oiled.

They do howl at full chat ???

Quick follow-up question on this: Did anyone ever bother having a detailed look at the air throughput/ velocity of (universal) replacement filters? Can't find any data sheets on most manufacturer websites. Can it just be assumed that it will be higher for sure than the orig. VP paper filters? How big is big enough and how critical is this?

Thks

What ever you do air filter wise the engine will not generate materially more power. So best, easiest is to use OEM filters
