Steering to port is not a problem but to starboard feels spongy and slow. Auto pilot works ok though so it is within the helm position.

What now?

I hesitated to give you a link to the internet as someone complained yesterday that I used the Internet too much.:)

Not familiar with Wagner, but is there a shut off valve for using emergency steering? If you close, actually i think it's open, it, you can wind the fluid round the closed circuit without it going to the steering ram, which helps with bleeding, servicing etc. you may need the pump serviced, sticky valves maybe.

I also have Wagner hydraulic steering and in any hydraulic system spongy and slow means only one thing that you have air in your system.

Depending on the piping setup it can be difficult to get air out. Check the piping runs and it you have any high points without a bleeding point that will be your problem.

Auto pilot on hydraulic steering is normally just a gear pump near the rudder cylinder so air would be between the autopilot pump and the helm pump.

Also, I had an air problem which was solved by fitting a pipe tail in place of the top plug and a feed from a car coolant expansion tank just above it. Constantly bleeds it. Inverted Fairy liquid bottle works as well, and I think you can buy a dedicated item for the purpose, transparent is good.

Many thanks for all your helpful suggestions. My main non understanding is that why only when trying to turn to Starboard.
I do have various valves so will try a logical open and shutting them to try to purge the upper section.
