not entirely sure just where I fit into a thread where it appears to be a ding dong between professional/ experienced royal navy and sailing boat skippers but just for the record.......

Not sure how many races I have been in either as skipper or crew but the last 4 years I was active were incredibly successful coming first in all series I took part in and usually first in most races.

While crew on a cruiser I managed to free the rudder from an anchor chain in the fast flowing Humber(it is not unknown to sink following such circumstance in the Humber).

I've saved a crews life as he attempted to jump overboard without a lifejacket to escape sea sickness , not entirely kin useless especially while racing ken ;)

Did we once meet at a sailing club regatta in the folly ?

What's wrong with Allan?

As others have painfully pointed out, Allan is 4th in a selection of 3. So I thought, (wrongly as posters have made plain, they prefer to include Allan)
Allan was just his signature.;)

I still stand by my question of what's wrong with a brolly? but there again I have a pilot-cutter that has no need for hundreds of pounds worth of foul weather PPE from Helly Hansen I've got a freebee brolly from Snap On Tools to transit to and from the boat:D

Scuse me, point of order. That is not a pilot cutter..........

This is.

I'm sure there's accurate sociological observation in Doug's description of a Navy (or other) group, showing fairly subtle, indiscriminate disrespect for all other seafarers, not of their own structured, strictured clique...

...but I expect the scornful tone encountered by PRR, (like a lightweight version of traditional, totally unreasoning soldier-versus-sailor animosity) isn't heartfelt, and shouldn't be interpreted as indicative of serious contempt towards non-RN sailors.

They did use sail themselves, a while back...
